2017년 11월 트럼프 미국 대통령의 아시아 순방 이후, 미국과 인도, 일본, 호주 등이 주도하는 인도-태평양 구상은 국제적인 주목을 받아왔다. 인도-태평양 구상이란 태평양과 인도양을 서로 연결 및 통합된 지정학적 공간으로 규정하고, 이를 바탕으로 외교, 경제, 안보 등의 각 부문에서 역내 국가들 사이의 협력 강화를 추구하는 전략이다. 이는 태평양과 인도양 두 대양(大洋)의 전략적인 연계성, 상호의존 관계 심화뿐만 아니라, 중국의 세력 확장과 현상타파적 대외 노선에 관한 아시아·태평양 지역 내부의 위협 인식 증대를 반영한 결과다. 그러나 한편으로, 인도-태평양 구상은 ① 중국과의 전략적 대결, 충돌 가능성에 따른 역내 안보, 경제 질서의 불안정 우려, ② 역내 국가들의 동참을 촉진할 수 있는 경제적 유인책 등의 과제도 안고 있다. 미국과 중국의 지정학적 경쟁에 노출되어 있는 한국도 인도-태평양 구상이 가져올 기회, 도전 요인들을 면밀히 주시하면서 능동적으로 대응할 필요가 있다.
