본 연구에서는 이성교제가 결혼으로 이행하기 전에 반드시 거쳐 가는 과정의 하나로 정의하고, 이성교제가 감소하면 결혼도 감소할 수밖에 없다는 배경 하에서 한국과 일본 청년들의 이성교제 현황과 결정요인에 대하여 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 이성교제의 (심리적) 연령 한계는 한국 남성 및 일본 남녀는 35세로 나타났으나, 한국 여성은 30세로 조금 빠르게 나타났다. 그리고 취업 여부는 일본 남성을 제외한 모든 이들에게서 이성교제확률을 높이는 효과가 나타났다. 취업 관련 요인은 경제적 자립 관련 요인이라 할 수 있는데, 이러한 요인은 한국 남성이 일본 남성보다 이성교제확률에 더욱 큰 영향을 미치고 있다는 것을 발견하였다. 또한, 한국 여성이 어느 정도 경제적인 요인이 이성교제에 영향을 미치는 반면, 일본 여성은 경제적 요인 관련 변수 중 취업 여부 이외에 유의한 변수가 보이지 않았다. 학력의 경우는 한국 남성과 일본 남성 간에 많은 차이점이 나타났는데, 한국 남성은 학력이 낮을수록 이성교제확률이 낮아졌던 반면, 일본 남성은 오히려 증가하는 것으로 나타났다. 이것은 일본의 개인사업자라는 특수성에서 오는 것으로 볼 수 있다고 해석할 수 있는데, 일본의 개인사업자들은 오랫동안 일을 하고, 소득이 어느 정도 있고, 고졸이 많은 특징이 결과에 반영된 것이라고 할 수 있겠다.

Dating is considered in this study as one of the necessary steps one must take before getting married. This study analyses the status and the determinants of dating among Korean and Japanese young adults based on the fact that a decline in dating leads to a decline in marriage. The results show that the effect of economic self-reliance on dating is larger among Korean young adults than among their Japanese counterparts. Economic variables affect dating among Korean young men. Especially, young men living with their parents are found to be less likely to have a girlfriend. Economic variables are found to affect dating for Korean young women but not for Japanese young women. The results find that none of the economic variables observed in this study affect dating among Japanese young women, presumably because of the employment environment of Japanese women.
