본 연구의 목적은 노인이 성인자녀와의 관계에서 느끼는 결속감이 연명의료 결정에 미치는 영향을 분석하는 것이다. 연명의료 결정은 회복이 불가능한 질병의 말기 상황을 가정 시, 적극적인 병원치료, 한방 등 대체의료, 고통 경감 중심의 호스피스, 죽음 중 하나를 선택하도록 하여 측정하였다. 성인자녀와의 결속감은 5가지 하위 차원-규범적 결속감, 부모가 자녀를 돕는 기능적 결속감, 자녀가 부모를 돕는 기능적 결속감, 애정적 결속감, 일치적 결속감으로 각각 측정하였다. 전국 노인 2,064명을 대상으로 실시된 설문자료를 활용하여 다항 로지스틱 회귀분석을 적용하여 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 규범적 결속감이 높을수록 적극적 병원치료 선택 가능성이 증가하였다. 부모가 자녀를 돕는 기능적 결속감이 높을수록 죽음을 선택할 가능성이 유의미하게 줄어들었다. 반대로, 자녀가 부모를 돕는 기능적 결속감이 높은 경우에는 호스피스를 선택할 가능성이 증가하고 적극적 병원치료와 대체의학을 선택할 가능성은 줄어들었다. 애정적 결속감이 높을수록 죽음 선택 가능성이 높아지고 대체의학 선택 가능성은 낮아졌다. 마지막으로, 일치적 결속감이 높을수록 대체의학을 선택할 가능성은 높아지고, 호스피스를 선택할 가능성은 낮아졌다. 이러한 분석 결과는 노인이 성인자녀와 갖는 관계가 생의 마지막을 준비하는 연명의료 결정에 영향을 미침을 보여준다.
