이 연구의 목적은 패배의 재해석을 통하여 인성교육적 함의를 탐구하는 것이다. 그동안 우리사회는 패배를 부끄러운 것으로 인식하다. 그 속에서 자란 학생들은 패배를 인정하지 못하는 경우가 있었다. 우리 사회에서 통용되는 승리는 좋은 것이고, 패배는 나쁜 것이라는 이분법적인 인식은 패배보다는 승리에 맹목적으로 집착하게 하였다. 그 결과 패배의 교육적 의미를 망각하였다. 패배를 통해서 우리가 얻을 수 있는 것은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 패배를 인정하는 것이다. 패배를 인정하지 않는 것은 승자와 패자의 대립을 가져오게 한다. 둘째, 상대의 승리를 인정하고, 축하해주는 것이다. 우리는 승자를 불신하는 이유는 공정한 경쟁이 진행되지 않았다고 생각하기 때문이다. 신체적 탁월성의 경쟁에서 패배했다면 상대의 승리를 인정하고 축하하는 것은 당연하다. 셋째, 패배는 부족한 부분을 보완할 기회이다. 패배는 승리보다 더 많은 것을 얻을 수 있다. 자신이나 팀의 부족한 부분을 보충하여 다음에 승리를 할 수 있게 한다. 이처럼 패배의 의미는 다양하다. 따라서 패배의 재해석을 통하여 우리는 상대의 존중과 배려, 패배의 인식과 준비 그리고 패배의 인내와 기다림이라는 인성교육적 함의를 찾을 수 있었다.
