This paper examines the emergence, development, and historical background of the panda boom and panda diplomacy from a strange animal to a national treasure. In the end of the 19th century, Westerners performed a series of research on giant pandas from a perspective of imperialism. Giant pandas attracted researchers’ interest much more than any other animal., because they looked cute.

In 1930s, the United States elevated panda’s popularity by making use of the mass media. When the real panda diplomacy began in 1941, the image of the giant panda symbolized peace through mass propaganda and was deeply rooted in the hearts of American citizens. Since its establishment, the People's Republic of China has made the best use of the image of pandas as soft power on the international stage and has still used the panda's diplomatic strategy actively.
