이 글은 캐나다 기숙학교라는 어두운 과거사가 이슈화되는 과정을 다루고 있다. 기숙학교는 유럽 캐나다인에 의해 자행된 식민주의 동화정책의 극단적 사례로, 오랜 침묵과 은폐를 넘어서 화해와 기억의 역사로 재구성되고 있다.

어두운 과거사의 인정과 가해 책임을 바탕으로 화해를 모색하는 가운데 정착자 식민주의라는 캐나다적 특수성을 극복하기 위한 각별한 노력은 ‘대화와 상호관계성’, ‘화해 과정의 불완전성 공유’라는 새로운 지향을 제공해주고 있다.

첫째, 기숙학교의 공적기억화를 통해 과거의 역사가 현재 이슈로 재생되는 관계성을 유지하고 서로 대화한다.

둘째, 역사교육과 사회적 이슈가 서로 조응하고 보완되고 있다. 정치담론에 의해 봉합된 선언적 결과가 교육에 이식되는 것이 아니라 교육문제의 논의가 사회적 이슈의 형성과 해결 과정의 중요한 축을 이루며 양자는 상호 소통하고 있다.

그리고 이러한 관계성을 유지하는 동력은 화해의 불완전성을 인정하고 완전한 단계를 지속적으로 추구하려는 인식을 공유하는 데 있다.

또한 기숙학교의 이슈는 해당 역사상에 대한 문제만이 아니라 그것을 다루는 역사학습 방법에 대한 문제를 제안함으로써 어두운 과거사의 논의를 확대하고 있다.

캐나다가 추구하는 지속 확산적 지향은 진실화해위원회의 활동이 기초가 되었으며 피해 당사자의 적극적인 폭로와 증언이 동력이 되었다. 이런 점에서 기숙학교의 사례는 서발턴의 자기 재현 가능성에 주목하는 새로운 영역을 제공해주고 있기도 하다.
