본 논문은 국내에서 코로나19에 감염된 첫 확진자가 발생한 이후의 관련 뉴스 제목을 언어학적으로 분석한 것이다. 본 연구에서는 코로나19와 관련된 뉴스를 살펴보면 감염증에 대한 불안감을 조성하거나 위험도를 강조하는 경우가 많고, 감염병에 대한 위험 프레임과 공포 마케팅이 감염자, 감염원에 대한 혐오로 이어지기도 한다는 점에 주목하였다. 그리고 코로나19 관련 뉴스 보도문의 헤드라인의 언어 표현과 특징을 분석함으로써 언론이 감염병에 대한 불안과 공포를 어떻게 조장하고 확산시키는지 살펴보고자 하였다. 그 결과 뉴스 제목에서 불안감을 조성하는 표현을 초점화하거나 위험 상황을 전쟁에 은유함으로써 감염병에 대한 공포를 유도하는 것을 확인하였다. 또한 신종바이러스를 명명하고 지칭할 때 ‘중국’, ‘우한’을 강조하여 질병 자체를 타자화하기도 하고 감염자나 감염원, 감염 경로에 대한 서술 과정에서 특정 지역이나 집단을 배척하는 표현을 사용함으로써 혐오적 시선을 부추기는 것을 확인하였다.
This study analyzes the titles of COVID-19 news reports during the six months after the first case of COVID-19 occurred in Korea. This study focuses on the fact that the expressions used in the news headlines and the contents of the reports often promote fear and disgust, and encourage discrimination and conflict. In turn, this risk frame and fear marketing for infectious diseases leads to violent attitudes such as discrimination and hate. Therefore, in this study, I analyze the headlines of COVID-19 news linguistically and examine how the media promote and spread the anxiety and the fear of infectious diseases. The results of this study can be summarized in two ways. First of all, titles that induce fear of infectious diseases by focusing on expressions that create anxiety about viruses or by using war metaphors for dangerous situations were widely used in the news. In addition, when naming and referring to the new virus, “China” and “Wuhan” were emphasized to otherize the disease itself, and in the process of describing the infected person, the source of infection, and the route of infection, expressions that reject specific regions or groups were frequently used. These titles and expressions may instigate hatred or intensify discrimination.
