본 연구는 18세기 베네치아의 패션 잡지 『우아하고 박식한 여성』에 나타나는 대안 담론을 조명한다. 루소를 포함한 대다수의 계몽주의자들은 신체적, 지적, 도덕적 차이를 모두 포함하는 여성의 생물학적 열등성에 대한 주장을 그대로 받아들였고, 이를 사회적 역할과 의무의 차이에 대한 담론으로 확대시켰다. 울스턴크래프트를 포함한 일단의 평등주의자들은 평등한 본성, 평등한 교육, 평등한 사회 참여를 주장하며 이들의 입장을 반박했다. 『우아하고 박식한 여성』이 취하고 있는 태도는 순응주의자의 입장과도 평등주의자의 입장과도 완전히 일치하지 않는다. 잡지의 기사는 왜곡된 여성성의 전제가 되는 생물학적 열등성에 대한 관념 그리고 그로부터 파생되는 여성의 의무와 교육에 대한 담론을 직접적으로 논박하려 하지 않았으며 양성의 평등을 주장하지도 않았다. 『우아하고 박식한 여성』은 울스턴크래프트를 포함한 평등주의자들과는 전혀 다른 방법으로 당대의 남성 중심적 담론에 대한 전복을 시도한다.

This study aims to analyze an alternative discourse that appeared in the eighteenth century Italian fashion magazine, Donna galante ed erudita, which was published from 1786 to 1788 in Venice. Most Enlightenment thinkers, including Jean Jacques Rousseau, supported the thesis on the biological inferiority of women and associated it with the differences between men’s and women’s social roles and duties. Their position was confuted by egalitarians, including Mary Wollstonecraft, who called for equality in the nature, education and social participation of the sexes. The position taken by Joseffa Cornoldi Caminer, editor of Donna galante ed erudita, was neither conformist nor egalitarian. She did not try to confute directly the idea of women’s biological inferiority or the male-dominated discourse on the sexes’ education and social duties and she did not explicitly promote women’s equality. Instead, in contrast to Wollstonecraft, she took a completely different approach to overthrowing the male-dominated discourse.
