초록보기

세력균형이론의 현실주의적 논리에 따르면, 중국이 초강대국으로 부상하고 막강한 경제력을 통해 막강한 군사력을 건설하게 되면, 주변국들은 궁극적으로 미국을 중심으로 하는 세력균형을 위한 연합을 형성함으로써 중국을 봉쇄하고자 할 것이다. 이는 냉전기간 동안 소련을 봉쇄하기 위해 미국이 주도했던 안보동맹에 서유럽국가들과 한국, 일본, 심지어 중국도 동참했던 것과 같은 방식이다. 과연 중국의 이웃 국가인 인도도 대중국 균형전략으로 전환하고 있는가? 본 연구는 인도의 중국에 대한 최근까지의 여러 전략적 행동들은 균형전략의 전형적인 특징으로 간주될 수 있으며, 따라서 신현실주의의 세력균형이론이 21세기 인도-중국 간 관계를 설명하는 데 있어서도 여전히 유효하다고 본다.
