Background : Inappropriate use of antimicrobial agents can lead to increasing the emergence of resistant bacteria, side effects, Clostridioides difficile infection rates, and medical costs. Thus, the importance of antimicrobial stewardship to promote the appropriate use of antimicrobials improve patient outcomes, reduce microbial resistance, and decrease the spread of infections caused by multidrug-resistant organisms has gained attention.
Methods : We evaluated prospectively if antibiotics prescription for more than 30 days was appropriate in adult patients who were admitted to Samsung Medical Center November 11th, 2020-April 30th, 2021.
Results : A total of 162 patients were enrolled. Of 632 antibiotics prescriptions, 58 (9.2%) were intervened through ASP. The reasons for ASP intervention were inappropriate duration (n=32, 52.5%), improper indication (n=12, 19.7%), incorrect dose (n=4, 9.8%), and conversion from intravenous to oral preparation (n=3, 4.9%). The modified portion of inappropriate antimicrobial prescriptions per month decreased from 24.4% in November 2020 to 4.1% in April 2021.
