본 연구는 시편의 지혜시들이 어떻게 잠언의 지혜 사상과 관련되는지를 파악하는 데에 그 목적이 있다. 과연 시편 안에 지혜시들이 있는가 라는 물음이 있지만, 본 연구는 시편 안에 지혜시들이 있고, 이것들이 시편의 배열과 구성에 매우 중요한 기능을 한다는 윌슨의 견해를 따른다. 시편 안에서 지혜시들은 시편의 주요 길목인 단락의 초두나 말미, 또는 중앙에 위치하여 시편의 해석학적 틀을 이룬다. 그래서 본 연구는 1권과 5권에 나타난 지혜시들을 분류하여 그 시들의 내용과 기능을 살폈다. 먼저 1권에서 지혜시는 1편, 9-10편, 25, 34편, 37편이다. 그리고 5권에서 지혜시는 107편, 111-112편, 115-116편, 118편, 119편, 127-128편, 그리고 145편이다.

시편의 지혜시들을 본격적으로 살피기 전에 잠언의 지혜사상의 핵심을 언급했다. 잠언의 지혜사상은 여호와를 경외할 때 지혜를 얻고 공의와 의를 깨달으면 마음에 기쁨을 얻는다는 것을 가르친다. 그리고 이런 지혜는 실천적 지혜를 얻도록 하여 이기적인 욕구를 제어하고 공의와 의로 집과 공동체를 세우며 땅과 장수와 재물과 같은 복을 준다는 것을 일깨워준다.

시편의 지혜시들은 고난 가운데 있는 포로후기 공동체를 겨냥하여 여호와를 경외하여 여호와의 말씀을 마음에 새기고 여호와를 의지하여 마음의 기쁨을 가질 것을 권면한다. 그리고 이를 위해 고난을 통과하면서 가난한 자가 될 것을 설득시킨다. 또한 이기적 욕구로 인간의 계획을 추구하는 것이 여호와 경외에 역행하는 것임을 경고한다. 그래서 여호와를 경외하는 자가 신중함으로 집과 공동체를 세운다는 것을 교훈한다. 이로써 열국의 지배로 땅을 갖지 못한 포로후기 공동체에게 여호와를 경외한다면, 궁극적으로 공동체를 세우고 땅을 차지하는 축복이 있다는 비전을 제시한다. 따라서 이런 지혜시의 내용들은 잠언의 지혜사상과 그 맥을 같이 함을 알 수 있다.
