This paper aims to examine the loves of the women as minorities in the Heian-era. For the research, I investigated The Tale of Ochikubo, focusing on the nickname of the heroin, the depiction of spaces, and the self-recognition of women. First, an analysis of the nickname of “Ochikubo”, revealed that the odious nickname makes the heroin feel deep humiliation. Second, the spaces lower than the ordinary floor and the shed with an offensive odor where she was confined leave her in physical and mental pain. Third, contextually studying the word “wagami” demonstrates women’s self-awareness and the recognition of the limitation of their social position. In conclusion, although the literature is evaluated as an exciting popular novel of the Heian-era, it represents the minority women’s voice and traces of their lives by using the form of fiction.
