The paper aims to study the academic meaning of Ninja. It focuses on the classical works in which Ninjas appear as main or sub-characters. In terms of timing, the focus lies on the Edo period of pre-modern Japan, where Ninjas were active in literature and entertainment, and their images were diversified. First, this paper intends to present the direction of academic research of Ninjas, especially text research in which Ninjas appeared, based on recent and earlier studies. Many earlier studies have attempteds to give meaning to and clearly define a Ninja.
Previously, Ninjas were treated only as a subject of Japanese subculture, which was far from academic research. However, academic definition and meaningfulness of Ninja are preceded, and approaches from various fields such as history, literature, and folklore are also being attempted. In accordance with these attempts, the commentator tried to see Ninjas, based on the narrative structure of the text, focusing on the Ninja’s story. In particular, we discussed the appearance and role of a Ninja, the main character of the text, the process of expanding their image, and the academic significance of Ninja stories. First of all, I would like to analyze the literary works of the Edo period, in which Ninjas appear as the subject of the work. As for the text and genre of the Edo period, the consistent and universal characteristics of Ninjas appearing in Kanazoshi, Ukiyozoshi, and Yomihon, which were enjoyed by the public, were identified. Next, we will look at the structural characteristics and significance of Ninja Story.
本論文は忍者に対する学術的意味研究から出発しようとした。忍者たちが、メインあるいはサブキャラクターとして、登場した古典作品のストーリーに焦点を合わせようと試みた。時期的には、文学と芸能で忍者が活躍し、彼らのイメージが多様化した、前近代日本の江戸時代を重点的に見てみようと思う。まず、本論文では、最近の既存先行研究を基盤にして忍者の学術的な研究、中でも忍者が登場したテキスト研究に対する方向性を提示しようとした。忍者に関する初期の先行研究は、忍者に対して意味を付与し、明確に定義しようと試みたものが多かった。これまで忍者は日本のサブカルチャーの素材としてのみ扱われ、学術的な研究対象とは程遠いものだった。しかし、忍者に対する学術的な定義と意味付与の作業が先行し、歴史、文学、民俗など多様な方面からの接近も試みられている。このような試みに刺激を受け、論者は忍者が登場する忍者ストーリーに焦点を合わせ、忍者の特徴を分析した。特にテキストの主要キャラクターである忍者の登場と役割、そのイメージが拡大していく過程、忍者ストーリーの学術的な意義について論じた。 まず、忍者が作品の主体、あるいは周辺に登場する江戸時代の文学作品を中心に分析を行った。 江戸時代のテキスト、ジャンルとしては、大衆が好んで見た仮名草子、浮世草子、読本に登場した忍者が持つ一貫して普遍的な特徴を把握した。その次に忍者ストーリーが持つ物語の構造的特徴と意義について考察を行った。
