초록보기

역사적으로 아랍어를 매개로 하는 번역 활동은 크게 두 차례 있었다. 두 번역운동은 지중해를 사이에 두고 아랍지역의 비옥한 초생달 지역과 스페인 이베리아 반도의 안달루스에서 활발하게 각각 수 세기에 걸쳐 짧지 않은 기간에 전개되었다. 1차 번역운동은 이라크 바그다드의 바이트 알히크마를 중심으로 전개되었으며, 2차 번역운동은 스페인 톨레도의 톨레도 학파를 중심으로 전개되었다. 지중해를 중심으로 동, 서 지역에서 수 세기에 걸쳐 진행되었던 1, 2차 아랍어 번역운동은 문화의 교류와 지식의 전달이라는 문명사적으로 매우 중요한 사건이었다. 1차 운동의 유산인 아랍어 문헌들은 유럽의 지적 성장에 밑거름 역할을 했으며, 후일 르네상스의 원동력 중 하나로 자리 매김하게 된다. 두 차례 번역 운동의 중심에 아랍어가 있었으며, 우리는 번역의 역사를 언급할 때는 아랍어 번역운동을 피해 갈 수 없다. 본 연구는 두 차례의 아랍어 번역 운동의 시대적 상황과 진행 과정의 고찰을 통해 각 번역 운동의 특징을 확인하고 각 번역 운동이 강력하게 추진될 수 있었던 요인을 비교하고자 한다.

Historically, there have been two major translation activities through the medium of Arabic. Both translation movements were actively developed in Baghdad of the Arab region and in Andalus of Spain, across the Mediterranean Sea for centuries, respectively. Both translation movements were very important events in the history of civilization, such as cultural exchange and knowledge transfer. Arabic works, the legacy of the first movement, served as a foundation for the intellectual growth of medieval Europe and later became one of the driving forces of the Renaissance. Arabic played a pivotal role in the two translation movements. So, when we refer to the history of translation, we cannot avoid Arabic translation movement. This study seeks to identify the characteristics of each translation movement through consideration of the historical situation and progress of the two Arabic translation movements and to compare the factors that enabled each translation movement to be strongly promoted.
