본 연구는 선거 여론조사 보도의 현황과 문제점을 파악하고 유권자의 뉴스 리터러시 향상을 위한 가이드라인을 제공하기 위해, 제20대 대통령 선거 관련 여론조사 결과를 보도한 일간지 기사를 분석했다. 전국 일간지 10개사와 지역 일간지 9개사의 온라인 기사 1,477건에 대한 내용분석을 실시하여 기사 제목의 특징과 해석 보도의 유형 및 문제점을 파악하고자 했다. 분석 결과, 선거 여론조사 보도 시 과거에 지적되었던 오차범위 해석의 오류나 조사 출처 및 개요를 명시하지 않는 등의 문제는 대체로 해소되었다. 그러나 기사 제목에서 드러나듯 지지율 수치를 중심으로 순위, 차이, 추세만을 강조하는 경마중계형 보도는 여전히 두드러진 특징이었다. 대부분의 보도는 결과 수치를 나열하고 최소한의 1차적 해석만을 제공하며, 2차적 해석의 경우도 따옴표 해석과 훈수두기, 그리고 정치에 대한 회의감을 조장하는 내용이 주요 특징이었다. 물론, 소수 보도의 경우 선거나 정치적 이슈를 심층적으로 분석하면서 조사 결과를 근거로 삼는 대안적 해석을 시도하기도 하였다. 본 연구에서는 유권자의 관심과 투표율 증가에 기여할 수 있다는 측면에서 경마중계형 보도의 필요성을 인정하고, 그러한 보도의 폐해를 최소화하는 방편으로 수용자의 뉴스 리터러시 향상이 중요하다는 점을 강조하였다. 이 연구가 언론에는 선거 여론조사 결과를 보도하는 데 유용한 조언인 동시에 뉴스 수용자에게는 좋은 뉴스를 선택하는 데 도움이 될 수 있기를 희망한다.

During the election period, numerous news articles report the results of surveys on voting intention and opinions. The aim of this study was to examine the characteristics and problems associated with polls coverage and provide guidelines to help news audience evaluate the quality of such news. Thus, we analyzed the contents of 1,477 online news items from 19 daily newspapers published in about two months leading up to the 20th presidential election in South Korea. Problems previously pointed out such as ignorance of the margin of error and failure to disclose important poll information have largely been resolved. However, most news showed the characteristics of horse-race coverage, focusing on the result figures and rankings only. Otherwise, they minimized interpretation of the meaning of the results. In case of interpretive news articles, we identified three features: quotes from third-parties, skepticism about politics and elections, and advice to candidates not voters. Only a few articles provided insightful analysis of the poll results, exploring important contextual factors and underlying political issues. We believe these findings highlight variations in news quality regarding their ability to engage audiences and foster their interest and participation in politics through the provision of poll results and their implications. Therefore, we have provided guidelines to enhance news literacy in selecting and evaluating news coverage of polls, which we hope will prove useful for both audiences and journalists.
