이 연구는 유럽과 달리 아시아는 왜 동북아 철도 네트워크가 실현되지 못하고 있는가라는 문제의식을 가지고 출발하고 있다. 앞으로 동북아 철도 네트워크가 실현될 수 있는가를 진단하고, 이를 위한 전제조건을 규명하고 하고자 한다. 이를 위하여 이 연구는 동아시아 역사를 주요 시대에 있어서 동북아 국제질서를 평화, 소통을 중심으로 역사적 의미를 파악하고자 한다. 또한 더 나아가 동북아 철도 네트워크를 위한 전제조건으로 한반도 통일과 아시아 평화를 중심으로 제시하고자 한다. 그 결과 다음과 같은 연구결과를 도출할 수 있었다.

그 연구결과 다음과 같은 연구결과를 도출할 수 있었다. 첫째, 19세기 제국주의 시대의 아시아 평화는 제국주의의 충돌이 전쟁으로 전개되는 자기중심적 일방적 소통이었다. 둘째, 20세기 냉전 시대의 아시아 평화는 미·소 냉전체제의 대립과 갈등이 단절로 전개되는 자기중심적 단절적 소통이었다. 셋째, 21세기 탈냉전 시대의 아시아 평화는 세계화와 지역통합 속에서 상호의존적 통합적 소통을 필요로 하고 있다. 한반도의 통일은 동북아 통합의 토대를 제공하여 아시아통합을 완성시키는 토대를 마련시킬 수 있다. 이러한 점에서 한반도 통일은 아시아 통합의 출발점이라는 역사적 교훈을 실현시켜야 할 것이다.

이러한 연구결과를 바탕으로 아시아 평화와 한반도 통일과 관련한 함의를 아래와 같이 정리된다. 첫째, 아시아 평화의 조건으로 자기중심적 일방적 단절적 소통이 아닌 상호의존적 통합적 소통을 필요로 하고 있다. 둘째, 역사적으로 아시아의 협력과 번영을 위해서는 지정학적 전략적 요충지인 한반도의 안정과 평화를 필요로 하고 있다. 셋째, 세계화와 지역통합 시대에서 아시아의 정치적·경제적 통합을 위해서는 한반도 통일을 필요로 하고 있다. 이를 통하여 볼 때 결론적으로 아시아 평화와 직결되는 한반도 통일은 동북아 철도 네트워크의 전제조건을 명확히 알 수 있다.

Unlike Europe, this study starts with a critical mind why the Northeast Asian railway network is not being realized in Asia. This study aims to diagnose whether a Northeast Asian railway network can be realized in the future, and identify the prerequisites for this. To this end, this study seeks to understand the historical meaning of the Northeast Asian international order centered on peace and communication in major periods of East Asian history. Furthermore, as a precondition for a Northeast Asian railway network, we would like to present the unification of the Korean Peninsula and peace in Asia.

As a result of the study, the following research results were derived. First, Asian peace in the era of imperialism in the 19th century was a self-centered, one-way communication in which the conflict of imperialism developed into a war. Second, Asian peace in the Cold War era of the 20th century was a self-centered, disconnected communication in which the confrontation and conflict of the US-Soviet Cold War system developed into a break. Third, peace in Asia in the post-Cold War era of the 21st century requires interdependent and integrated communication amidst globalization and regional integration. In this respect, the historical lesson that unification of the Korean Peninsula is the starting point of Asian integration should be realized.

Based on these research results, the implications related to peace in Asia and unification of the Korean Peninsula are summarized as follows. First, as a condition for peace in Asia, interdependent and integrated communication is required, not self-centered, one-sided, disconnected communication. Second, historically, cooperation and prosperity in Asia require stability and peace on the Korean Peninsula, which is a geopolitical and strategic point. Third, in the era of globalization and regional integration, the political and economic integration of Asia requires the unification of the Korean Peninsula. From this, it is clear that the unification of the Korean Peninsula, which is ultimately connected with peace in Asia, is a prerequisite for the Northeast Asian railway network.
