본 연구는 Chomsky의 결속 원리와 지배 범주 매개 변항으로 표현되는 재귀사의 결속 범위와 해석에 관한 연구로써, 조기 이중 언어 사용자의 한국어 재귀사 “자기”의 결속 범위와 해석에 대해 연구했다. 특히 영어 사용권 국가에서 거주하며 지속적으로 영어에 노출됐던 한국어 계승 화자의 한국어 재귀대명사 “자기”의 해석 양상에 초점을 맞추었다. 한국에 거주하면서 한국어와 영어에 동시에 노출되고 있는 한국어 계승 화자를 대상으로 한국어 재귀대명사 “자기”가 포함된 문장 이해를 요구하는 그림 판단 과제와 문답형 질문을 실시하여 한국어 재귀사 “자기”가 문장에서 어떤 명사를 지칭하는지 응답하게 했다. 그 결과 한국어 계승 화자는 “자기”를 한국어 모국어 화자와 다르게 해석했는데, 이는 영어의 재귀사 결속 범위에 관한 지식을 한국어 재귀사 지식에도 적용시키는 “역전이 현상” 혹은 한국어 지식의 불완전한 습득에 기인한 것으로 보인다. 흥미로운 점은, 영어 재귀사 해석을 묻는 영어 문장의 경우 “-self”가 단거리 결속이라는 속성만 가지고 있음에도 일부 한국어 계승 화자가 “-self”가 지칭할 수 있는 명사구의 범위를 장거리로 인식하고, 장거리 결속을 선호하여 문장을 해석한 것이다. 이는 한국어 재귀사 결속 범위에 대한 지식이 영어 재귀사 결속 범위에 영향을 준 것으로 보이며, 이 또한 전이 현상으로 설명될 수 있다. 두 결과를 종합적으로 볼 때, 본 연구는 다중 언어 사용자의 다중 언어 지식으로 인한 양방향 전이 현상이 발생했음을 암시한다.

This paper investigated the interpretation of the Korean reflexive pronoun “caki,” which is specified by binding principles and is a governing category parameter in early bilingual speakers. It focuses on Korean heritage speakers, specifically, bilingual speakers who were raised in an English-speaking community but can still understand and communicate in Korean. We asked Korean heritage speakers who were exposed to Korean and English, who are currently residing in Korea, to identify the proper antecedent for the Korean reflexive pronoun “caki” in both a picture identification task and a questionnaire. The results showed that Korean heritage speakers interpreted “caki” differently from Korean native speakers, indicating that they applied the English binding parameter of the reflexive pronoun “-self.” This could be the result of either the reverse transfer, which refers to the effect of the second language on the native language, or L1’s incomplete acquisition. Interestingly, some Korean heritage speakers identified some English reflexive forms of “-self” as long-distance binding, which could have been the result of either the influence of knowledge regarding the Korean reflexive binding parameter or the pragmatic knowledge that is used in Korean. Both can be referred to as L1 transfer. These results imply a bidirectional transfer in the multilingual person’s linguistic knowledge.
