근세 충청도 공주 출신의 유학자 송석 이병연(1894∼1976)은 『東國輿地勝覽』 이후 최대의 지리서인 『朝鮮寰輿勝覽』을 편찬한 인물로 유명하다. 『조선환여승람』은 16세기의 『동국여지승람』, 19세기의 『대동지지』를 이어 20세기 중엽까지의 자료를 최대한 반영한 최신 지리서다. 한 개인이 방대한 분량의 지리서를 편찬한 점, 그것도 상업용 판매를 통해 보급했다는 점 등 특기할 만한 점이 여러 가지다. 시골에 살던 한 지성인이 사회에 기여할 방법을 찾은 끝에 인문지리서의 편찬으로 민족정기와 주체의식을 찾고자 했다. 여기서 이병연의 志士的 면모를 엿볼 수 있다. 이 글은 이병연의 삶과 학문정신이 주된 내용이다. ‘인물탐구’ 차원에서 ‘이병연은 어떤 사람인가’에 초점을 두었다. 나아가 그가 『조선환여승람』의 편찬에 나서게 된 목적과 그에 담긴 정신세계를 고찰하였다. 이병연은 우리가 일시적으로 국권을 빼앗겼지만, 아직 지리와 역사가 살아 있고, 역대 인물들의 정신이 살아 있음을 『조선환여승람』을 통해 증명하고자 하였다.

Song-seok Lee Byeong-yeon(1894∼1976), a modern time Confucian scholar from Gongju, Chungcheong province, is well known as the writer of 『JoSeonHwanYeoSeungRam(朝鮮寰輿勝覽)』, the geographic book greatest ever since 『DongGukYeoJiSeungRam(東國輿地勝覽)』. In such modern period, 『JoSeonHwanYeoSeungRam』 was the newest geographic book that reflected the data scattering till the middle of the 20th century as much as they could be collected following 『DongGukYeoJiSeungRam』 of the 16th century and 『DaeDongJeeJee』 of the 19th century. It has various specialties including the point that a person wrote a geographic book with huge amount of data, the point that it was distributed through commercial marketing ways and etc. An intellectual living in a provincial village tried to look for a way of contributing to the society and then finally made his best to make the people regain the national spirit and independent sense by writing an anthropo-geographic book, which gives us a clew to see Lee Byeong-yeon’s patriotic appearance. This article is mainly about his life and academic spirit, focusing on the issue, ‘What manner of man is Lee Byeong-yeon?’, in the aspect of ‘looking into a character’. Furthermore, this article investigates the purpose that he resolved to write 『JoSeonHwanYeoSeungRam』 for and the spiritual world that the book shows. Lee Byeong-yeon wanted to prove that the geography and history of Korea were still alive and the spirits of historic figures would never die by writing 『JoSeonHwanYeoSeungRam』 even if Korea lost its national rights temporarily.
