최근 발표된 마이클 마리슨의 연구, “근대(성)에 반(反)하는 바흐”(“Bach against Modernity”) 는 2010년 이후 서구의 바흐 연구에서 등장한 바흐와 근대성 담론을 혹평하면서, 작곡가는 근대가 아닌 전근대의 가치와 호응했던 인물이라 주장하고 있다. 이러한 주장은 당대의 신학 언어, 즉 당대의 루터교가 전근대적인 가치를 선포하고 수호하였고, 바흐는 이러한 루터교의 입장을 저항 없이 수용했던 전형적인 루터교인이라는 사고에 바탕을 두고 있다. 이 글은 마리슨의 주장, 즉, 바흐와 그의 음악이 전근대의 가치를 담고 있다는 주장을 비판적으로 검토하고, 이러한 주장을 어떻게 읽어야 할지 논의한다. 이를 위해 이 글은 당대 루터교의 교리를 보다 넓은 신학적 맥락에서 설명하고, 바흐가 창작한 음악과 그것의 성격을 분석한다. 최종적으로 이 글은 바흐 담론에 등장한 바흐와 근대의 문제를 어떤 태도와 방식으로 바라보아야 할지 질문하고 있다.

This study explores current discussions about the notion of modern and premodern reflected in J. S. Bach and his works. In his recent article, “Bach against Modernity,” Michael Marissen argues that Bach’s close relation to the notion of modernity proposed by John Butt in his study, Bach’s Dialogue with Modernity, is wrongly formulated. Instead, Marissen claims that Bach and his music conveys pre-modern mentality and attitudes that adhere to the Lutheran theology of the time. This study examines Marissen’s arguments by focusing upon the theological langueges of the time, also examining the musical expressions that Bach set for his cantatas. After critically analyzing the theological as well as musical contexts of Bach’s cantatas, this paper leaves a question if the discussion about Bach in light of modernity is useful in order to apprehend the composer and his work.
