이 논문은 히에로뉘무스의 에스겔서 주석에 등장하는 네 동물과 synteresis, scintilla conscientiae, conscientia의 의미와 함축을 당대 사상과 연관시켜 분석하는 것을 목표로 한다. 스콜라 사상가들을 비롯한 후대의 많은 주석가들은 히에로뉘무스가 비판하고자 하는 견해와 히에로뉘무스 자신의 견해를 혼동함으로써 많은 혼란을 야기했고 불필요한 논쟁을 벌였다. 관련 문헌들의 면밀한 검토를 통해 다음과 같은 결론에 도달하게 된다.

첫째, 히에로뉘무스가 에스겔서 1장 주석에서 비판하는 ‘철학자들의 어리석은 지혜를 추종하는 자들’은 오리게네스와 나지안조스의 그레고리오스 또는 이들의 견해를 따르는 자들이다. 히에로뉘무스는 이들의 견해가 사도들의 가르침에 기초한 것이 아니라 소위 헬라 현자들의 어리석은 지혜에 기초하고 있음을 비판한다.

둘째, 철학자들의 어리석은 지혜를 추종하는 자들은 양심의 영 또는 독수리가 높이 비상해서 모든 것을 감찰하며 영혼의 잘못을 교정한다고 주장한다. 하지만 히에로뉘무스에 따르면 사람의 영 또는 양심의 영은 경우에 따라 박탈당할 수도 있는 하나님의 선물이다. 이 때문에 양심이 완전히 추락한 사람도 존재하는 것이다. 이렇게 본다면 인간 양심을 무오류한 synderesis(양심의 불꽃)와 오류를 범할 수도 있는 conscientia로 나누어 이해하고자 한 후대 스콜라 사상가들의 해석은 히에로뉘무스에 대한 오해에 기인한 것이며, 히에로뉘무스는 synderesis와 conscientia를 구분하지 않았다.

셋째, 히에로뉘무스는 인간을 영/혼/육 세 부분으로 나누어 이해하는 것이 성경의 증거와 부합한다고 생각했다. 하지만 그는 사람의 영이 덕에 의해 불타오를 수도 있는 반면 악으로 인해 꺼질 수도 있음을 인정한다. 히에로뉘무스가 보기에 인간 양심은 상실될 수도 있는 하나님의 선물이다. 그런데도 철학자들의 헛된 지혜를 추종하는 자들은 이를 망각하고 마치 사람의 영 혹은 양심이 결코 오류를 범하지 않는 하나님 자신인 것처럼 착각했다.

This paper aims to analyze the meaning and implication of four animals, synteresis, scintilla conscientiae and conscientia in Jerome’s commentary on Ezekiel, in the context of thoughts of the Early Church (i.e. Platonism, Gnosticism, Early Church Fathers’ theory of the soul). Later commentators including Schoolmen caused a lot of confusion, mistaking the view that Jerome wants to criticize for Jerome’s own view. Looking closely through related literatures, we will get the following conclusions:1. ‘Those who follow the foolish wisdom of philosophers’ are Origen, Gregory of Nazienzus or those who follow their views on human being. Jerome criticizes them, in that their views are based not on the teaching of the Apostles but on the foolish wisdom of the Greek sages.

2. ‘Those who follow the foolish wisdom of philosophers’ maintain that the spark of conscience or the eagle which is not mixed up with the parts of the soul corrects their errors. In contrast, according to Jerome, to pneuma tou anthropou or conscientiae spiritus is a gift from God which can be deprived of. That is the reason why conscience is cast down in some people. In this respect, Schoolmen’s view that distinguishes infallible synderesis from fallible conscientia, is based on a misunderstanding of Jerome’s intention. Jerome did not distinguish synderesis from conscientia.

3. According to Jerome, the tripartite view that human being is a composite of three distinct components (body, spirit and the soul) corresponds to teaching of the Bible. Nevertheless, he acknowledges that to pneuma tou anthropou can be extinguished through human vice. In Jerome’s thought, human conscience is God’s gift that can be taken away. And yet, ‘those who follow the foolish wisdom of philosophers’ forgot that fact, mistaking human spirit (or conscience) for infallible God himself.
