옌롄커의 소설 『사서』는 반우파투쟁과 대약진운동, 대기근을 시대적 배경으로,. 황하(黃河) 강변의 위신구(育新區) 제99구에서 노동 개조의 대상이 된 지식인들을 통하여 국가폭력을 다루고 있다. 그리고 한편으로는 폭력이 횡횡하는 극한의 상황에서 생존을 위한 동물적인 본능에 지배되지 않으려는 인간 존엄성을 고찰하였다. 소설 『사서』의 일반적인 인과관계는 붕괴되어 있으며, 현실과 비현실이 교차하고 혼재되어 나타난다. 이 소설이 가진 환상성, 즉 비현실과 현실의 혼재를 좇아가는 것은 이 글의 출발점이라고 할 수 있다.

첫째, 『사서』를 관통하는 것은 성경의 문체와 종교적 상징이라고 할 수 있다. 『하늘의 아이(天的孩子)』에서 인물 ‘아이’를 중심으로 성경적 문체와 절대자의 소설적 장치에 대하여 분석하였다. 둘째, 『옛길(故道)』에서 인물 ‘작가’를 중심으로 피를 먹고 옥수수알처럼 자라버린 밀알의 서사를 통하여 비현실과 현실의 혼재에 대하여 고찰하였다. 이로써 신실주의와 환상성의 접점을 파악할 수 있었다. 셋째, 『新 시시포스의 신화』에서 인물 ‘학자’를 중심으로 ‘시시포스 신화’와 부조리를 분석하였다. 우화를 통하여 과거에서 현재까지 반복의 굴레에 놓인 중국인을 고찰하였다.
