이 연구는 한국어 교재 내에서 활용되고 있는 역할극 활동에 대한 비판적 검토와 시사점을 제공하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 이를 위해 역할극 활동에 대한 이론적 고찰, 한국어 발달 단계에 대한 검토와 역할극 활용 가능성, 한국어 교재 내 역할극 활동 양상 분석 등을 실시하였다. 한국어교육에서 역할극은 말하기 활동으로 활용도가 높은 활동이며, 대부분의 교재에서 다양한 방식으로 구현되고 있다. 그러나 역할극의 본래 취지와 특성에 맞추어 활동을 구성하기 위해서는 고려할 점이 있다. 이 연구는 이러한 부분을 살피고 향후 역할극을 구성할 때 한국어의 발달 단계에 따라 활용할 수 있는 역할극의 요소와 고려할 점에 대해서 제시하였다.
