본 연구는 보스니아 출신 독일 작가 사샤 스타니시치 Saša Stanišić(1978~)의 작품 『출신(Herkunft)』에 나타난 기원을 통한 정체성 문제를 고찰한다. 2019년 독일 도서상을 수상한 스타니시치의 『출신』은 자전적 이야기와 환상적 허구를 교대로 쓴 작품으로, 자신의 어린 시절, 보스니아에서의 탈출과 독일에서의 삶에 대한 이야기를 다루고 있다. 텍스트 본문은 63개의 작은 장과 에필로그로 구성되어 있으며, 정체성, 기원, 고향에 대해 탐구하고 있다. 『출신』은 선형적이거나 연대기적인 전기가 아니라 다양한 출신의 사람들의 다층적이고 생생한 초상화이다. 스타니시치는 텍스트에서 다른 문화, 언어 및 기억 사이를 어떻게 이동하는지 보여주고 있기 때문에 정체성은 특히 중요한 문제가 될 수 있다. 스타니시치는 자신을 형성한 다양한 기원과 영향에 대해 이야기하며 자신의 정체성에 있어 언어, 역사, 돌발성의 역할을 강조한다. 따라서 본 연구에서 현대의 이주민들에게 정체성은 자신만의 모험을 선택하는 기회이자 자유라는 것이 밝혀질 것이다.

This study examines finding identity through origin in the work Herkunft by the Bosnian-born German writer Saša Stanišić (1978~). The writer was born in Višegrad, Yugoslavia in 1978, and moved to Heidelberg, Germany in 1992 to escape the war in Bosnia. Herkunft by Saša Stanišić, winner of the 2019 German Book Award, is a work that alternates between autobiographical narrative and fantasy fiction, telling the story of his childhood, his escape from Bosnia, and his life as a successful writer in Germany. The main body of the text consists of 63 chapters and an epilogue, dealing with questions of identity, origin and homeland. The book is not a linear or chronological biography, but a multi-layered and vivid portrait of people of many origins.

Identity can be a particularly important issue because Stanišić shows how we move between different cultures, languages, and memories in Herkunft. By exploring his identity through a variety of narrative forms, he shows that identity is not fixed or simple, but complex and changing. Stanišić talks about the various origins and influences that have shaped him, emphasizing the role of language, history, and suddenness in his identity. Therefore, by examining the author’s looking for identity in this study, it will be revealed that for Stanišić, identity is an opportunity and freedom to choose one’s own adventure.
