This study conducted a survey involving intermediate Korean and Chinese Japanese learners and native Japanese speakers in order to provide a basis for Japanese learners to use causal expressions ‘~から’ ‘~ので’ and ‘~て’ more naturally. The study examined the usage tendencies of Korean, Chinese, and Japanese learners and compared and analyzed the commonalities and differences among them. Furthermore, based on these distinctions, we highlighted the aspects that Korean and Chinese learners of Japanese should be mindful of during their learning process. The results are as follows.
Points to Note for Korean Learners of Japanese:
1) When modality is expressed in the main clause, ‘ので’ is used when influenced by politeness or when one does not want to reveal their own assertion or opinion, while ‘から’ is used considering the objectivity of the sentence. ‘ので’ is used when describing phenomena.
2) In sentences containing greetings or emotional expressions, typically use ‘~て’ regardless of interpersonal relationships.
3) In a family context, generally use ‘~から’.
Points to Note for Chinese Learners of Japanese:
1) When modality expressions appear in main clauses, consider not only the objectivity of the sentence but also the assertiveness and formality, and use either ‘~から’ or ‘~ので’ .
2) In sentences containing greetings or emotional expressions, typically use ‘~て’ regardless of interpersonal relationships.
3) In hierarchical or superior–inferior relationships, use ‘~ので’ or ‘~から’.
