시지윅은 타산의 원칙에 기초한 이기주의와 보편적 박애의 원칙에 기초한 공리주의 방법이 서로 상충할 수 있음을 주장하면서 이성이 상충하는 행위를 합당하게 명령할 수 있다는 실천이성의 이원론을 제기한다. 그는 두 방법이 충돌한다면, 둘 중 하나는 수정되거나 거부되어야 한다는 전제 아래 이원론을 극복하기 위한 논증들을 검토하지만, 만족스러운 답을 얻지 못한다. 그러나 이원론의 수용은 보편화 가능성에 기반한 도덕 체계를 훼손하면서 비합리적 충동에 의한 행위를 모두 허용할 수 있다. 그렇기에 실천이성의 이원론은 어떻게든 극복되어야 한다. 라자리-라덱과 피터 싱어는 진화론을 활용해 이원론 극복 논증을 전개한다. 이들은 ‘꾸러미로서의 이성’을 통해 인간이 진화적 압력과 구분되는 도덕적 진리를 인식할 수 있음을 주장하고, 진화적 폭로를 활용해 보편적 박애는 진화적 폭로에서 제외되지만 타산은 폭로에 노출됨을 논증함으로써 합리성 측면에서 이원론이 극복 가능함을 주장한다. 그러나 보편적 박애 또한 진화적 폭로에 노출된다는 반론이 제기된다. 무엇보다 타산과 보편적 박애의 조화 방안을 다루는 추가적인 논의가 요구된다.

Sidgwick argues that egoism based on the principle of prudence and utilitarianism based on the principle of universal benevolence may conflict with each other, and raises the dualism of practical reason that reason can reasonably command conflicting conduct. He examines arguments to overcome dualism on the premise that if the two methods conflict, one of them must be modified or rejected, but does not get a satisfactory answer. However, the acceptance of dualism would undermine morality based on the possibility of universalizability and permit conduct driven by irrational pulses. Therefore, the dualism of practical reason must be overcome somehow. Lazari-Radek and Peter Singer use evolutionary theory to develop an argument for overcoming dualism. They argue that through ‘reason as a package’, humans can recognize moral truths distinct from evolutionary forces, and they use evolutionary debunking to show that principle of universal benevolence is exempt from debunking, while principle of prudence is exposed to debunking. So they argue that dualism of practical reason can be overcome in terms of rationality. However, there are objections that universal benevolence is also exposed to evolutionary debunking. Above all, additional discussions are required to address ways to harmonize prudence and universal benevolence.
