본 연구의 목적은 ‘독일 민주주의 위기’의 한 원인으로 지목되고 있는 극우 정당 ‘독일을 위한 대안당(AfD)’의 성장 요인을 소셜미디어 공간 내의 활동 속에서 찾아보고, 그로부터 야기되는 ‘민주주의 위기’의 극복 방안을 모색하는 데에 있다. 지금까지 AfD의 성장에 관한 대부분의 연구 결과물은 선거 결과 및 여론 동향에 대한 부분적인 분석에만 집중해 왔다. 본 연구는 AfD의 성장 요인을 보다 종합적으로 파악할 필요가 있다는 문제의식에서 출발한다. AfD 성장에 대한 입체적인 해석을 위해 본 연구는 AfD의 주체적인 활동을 추적하는 작업에 집중한다. 그중에서 본 연구가 집중하는 부분은 AfD의 소셜미디어 활용 전략이다. 정보화 이후 정치 활동의 장으로 부상한 사이버 공간을 활용한 AfD의 유권자 접근 전략 및 유인전략을 분석함으로써 AfD가 급성장할 수 있었던 또 다른 요인을 찾아내고자 하는 것이다. AfD는 미디어를 통해 대중들에게 자신들을 ‘시민적’, ‘중도’, ‘보수’ 성향의 정치 세력으로 각인시키려 애쓴다. 이들은 무해 이미지 전략과 개념 재의미화 전략을 통해 유권자의 반감과 경계심을 누그러뜨리려 한다. 그리하여 종국에는 제도 정치권 내에서 극우 정당의 ‘정상화(Normalisierung)’를 이루려 한다. 혐오와 대결의 정치를 지향하는 극우 세력의 득세는 독일 민주주의의 위기로 귀결된다. 독일 민주주의의 위기를 예방하고, 극우 세력의 확산 방지를 위한 제도적 방안을 강구하는 것뿐만 아니라 기성 정치 세력의 뉴미디어 활용 능력 강화가 필요한 상황이다.

The purpose of this study is to identify the growth factors of the far-right party, specifically Alternative Party for Germany (AfD), in Germany. Among others, this paper seeks to delve into the causes of growth of AfD, which has been deemed a contributing factor to the “German democratic crisis,” particularly in relation to their social media activities, hence to find a way to overcome the 'democratic crisis' it has caused. While previous research primarily focused on superficial analyses of election results and public opinion trends, this study recognizes the importance of comprehensively understanding the growth factors of AfD. For a comprehensive interpretation of AfD growth, this study focuses on tracking the independent activities of AfD. Among them, this study pays particular attention to AfD's social media use strategy. The objective of this examination is to find an additional factor that facilitated AfD’s rapid growth by analyzing AfD's strategy to access voters and incentive strategy using cyberspace that has newly emerged after informatization. The AfD strives to stand out as a political force with 'civil', 'moderate', and 'conservative' tendencies. They try to alleviate voter antipathy and alertness by the ‘Selbstverharmlosung’ as well as a ‘Umdeutung’ strategy. Through this, AFD ultimately aims for the 'Normalization(Normalisierung)' of the far-right parties within the established party system of German politics. The rise of the far-right forces, which pursue a politics of hatred and confrontation, directly correlates with the crisis of democracy. Consequently, it is imperative to prevent the crisis of democracy in Germany, devise institutional measures to prevent the spread of the far-right forces, and bolster the capacity of the established political forces to effectively utilize new media.
