본고는 박태순 소설에 나타난 로컬리티와 생태적 상상력의 재현 양상을 규명하고자 한다. 박태순의 소설이 주목하는 지역적 공간의 특성은 여러 작품들에서 다양한 방식으로 재현된다. 이 글은 그의 소설이 다루는 지역성과 공간의 의미가 역사적 시대의 변화 과정에 긴밀하게 호응하면서, 당대의 삶을 살아가는 민중들의 모습을 생생하게 재현하는 역할을 한다고 본다. 구체적으로 그의 소설에 구현되는 로컬리티는 황해도 지역에서 태어나 성장하고 전쟁을 겪으면서 월남난민으로서 정착하는 가운데 형성된 ‘사민’ 의식 속에서 진전된다.

박태순이 주목하는 ‘실향사민’의 삶은 개별적 자아의 경험에 머무는 것이 아니라 분단체제의 현실이 아로새겨진 공적 기억의 의미로 확장된다고 할 수 있다. 특히 ‘나무’의 상징으로 구현된 장소기억의 의미는 생태적 세계의 위기가 전쟁과 폭력에 노출된 민중적 삶의 위기와 맞물려 있음을 보여준다. 인물들은 인력으로 대항할 수 없는 재해와 재난 앞에서 자연의 순환과 생태의 원리를 깨닫게 된다.

그의 소설에서 인물들이 자연에 대해 경의를 표하는 과정은 단순한 순응이 아니라 자신의 장소와 관계를 맺는 새로운 정체성을 얻어가는 과정이라고 할 수 있다. 이러한 연구 논의는 그의 소설이 지닌 로컬리티의 의미와 민중성의 문학적 재현을 연관시켜 해석하는 데 도움을 줄 수 있다.

This paper seeks to investigate the aspects of representation of locality and ecological imagination in Park Tae-soon’s novels. The characteristics of regional space that Park Tae-soon’s novel focuses on are reproduced in various ways in various works. This article believes that the locality and meaning of the space covered in his novel closely corresponds to the change process of historical times and plays a role in vividly reproducing the people living their lives at the time. Specifically, the locality embodied in his novels is formed in the consciousness of displaced persons developed while he was born and raised in the Hwanghae-do Province, experienced the war, and settled down as a refugee from North Korea.

The life of the ‘displaced civilians’ that Park Tae-soon focuses on is not simply an experience of the individual self, but can be said to be a world of public memory in which the reality of the division system is engraved. In particular, the meaning of place memory embodied in the symbol of ‘Tree’ shows that the crisis of the ecological world is intertwined with the crisis of people’s lives exposed to war and violence. The characters come to realize the principles of nature’s cycle and ecology in the face of disasters and catastrophes that cannot be countered by manpower.

In his novels, the process by which the characters show respect for nature is not simply adaptation, but a process of gaining a new identity in relation to their place. It is expected that these characteristics of the work can provide important implications in interpreting the spatial characteristics of his novels and their meaning of popular character.
