전 세계에 다문화 공존이라는 이슈에 무슬림 이민문제가 있다. 유럽에서 가장 많은 무슬림이 사는 프랑스 사회는 아주 오래전부터 이주민의 통합에 큰 노력을 기울여 왔지만, 현실적으로 이질적인 문화는 여전히 유지되고 문화간 갈등으로 증폭되어 일상에서의 평화와 안전을 위협하기도 했다. 다문화사회를 들여다볼수록, 다양한 민족과 인종 간의 문화 갈등이 불가피하다는 결론에 이른다. 다양한 민족 및 문명 간의 접촉에는 많은 문제가 발생하기 마련이다. 문제의 심각성은 타문화에 대한 몰이해에서 비롯된 일상에서 혐오 감정의 증폭이다. 이질적인 것에 관한 폄훼는 타문화에 대한 무지에서 비롯되는 경우가 많은데 그 본질보다 더 확대 재생산되어 일상에서의 혐오와 배제 정치로 작동하게 된다는 데 더 큰 문제가 있다.

이와 같은 문제의식에서 출발한 본 연구는 다문화사회의 상생과 공존을 위한 노력의 하나로 파리 아랍세계연구소에 주목했다. 아랍세계연구소를 국내에 처음 소개하는 이글은 1987년 ‘정치 기획’으로 설립되어 오늘날 편견과 테러와 맞선 ‘중재의 장소’로 성장한 아랍세계연구소가 걸어온 ‘어려운 성장’의 지난 30년을 조명하는 데 주된 연구의 목표를 두었다. 동시에 본 연구는 사회통합의 수단이자 더 큰 갈등을 방지하기 위한 ‘소통의 장소’로 박물관의 사회적 역할과 기능을 살펴보고자 한다. 아울러 다문화사회로 진행되어 문화 상호간의 갈등과 마찰이 불가피한 한국 사회에도 시사점을 제공하는 데 연구의 의미를 둔다.

The issue of Muslim immigration poses substantial challenges to multicultural coexistence globally. In France, which hosts the largest Muslim population in Europe, significant efforts have been made over time to integrate migrants. However, cultural heterogeneity remains a persistent reality, and intercultural conflicts have intensified, threatening daily peace and security. A closer examination of multicultural societies reveals that cultural conflicts among diverse ethnicities and races are inevitable. Interactions between different ethnic groups and civilizations often lead to a range of issues. The seriousness of these problems is evident in the growing animosity in everyday life, often stemming from a lack of understanding of other cultures. Such denigration of foreign elements typically arises from cultural ignorance, and more concerning is the fact that this ignorance is frequently amplified, leading to a politics of hatred and exclusion in daily interactions.

Building on this problem awareness, this study investigates the Arab World Institute in Paris as a central initiative in promoting coexistence and harmony within a multicultural society. Introducing the Arab World Institute to a Korean audience for the first time, this paper aims to shed light on the Institute's challenging journey over the past 30 years. Founded in 1987 as a political initiative, the Institute has evolved into a key mediator in combating prejudice and terrorism. Additionally, this research explores the social roles and functions of museums as instruments of social integration and spaces for dialogue to prevent broader conflicts. Furthermore, this study offers valuable insights for Korean society, which is progressing towards multiculturalism, where cultural conflicts and tensions are inevitable.
