본 논문은 이탈리아 페라라에서 태어나 독일 하이델베르크에서 29살이라는 이른 나이에 숨진 올림피아 풀비아 모라타라는 16세기 여성 인문주의자이자 프로테스탄트 개혁자의 생애에 대한 연구이다. 필자는 올림피아의 생생한 목소리가 담긴 편지를 일차 사료로 하여 분석함으로써, 그녀의 삶과 사상의 변화를 추적할 것이다. 올림피아의 자전적 편지는 그녀 자신의 생애를 자세하게 복원하는 사료인 동시에 16세기 여성 개혁자의 사상을 엿볼 수 있는 창이기도 하다.

필자는 두 가지 이유에서 올림피아에게 관심을 가졌다. 첫째로, 올림피아라는 인물 안에서 인문주의 정신과 종교개혁 운동이 하나로 만나기 때문이다. 올림피아의 생애를 복원하여 보면 인문주의자가 어떻게 성서에 천착한 종교개혁자가 될 수 있는지를 보게 된다. ‘성서적 인문주의자’ 올림피아 안에서 인문주의와 종교개혁의 친화력을 확인하게 된다. 둘째로, 여성 종교개혁자에 관한 관심 때문이다. 여성 개혁자에 관한 연구는 그동안 종교개혁 운동에서 간과됐던 여성의 역할과 참여를 밝힘으로써 종교개혁사 연구에 다양성을 제공하고 종교개혁을 바라보는 시각의 균형을 잡기 위한 노력이라 할 것이다. 더욱이 올림피아 모라타라는 이탈리아 여성은 국내에 거의 소개되어 있지 않기 때문에 본 연구의 의의가 있다고 할 것이다.

This thesis examines the life of Olympia Fulvia Morata, a 16th-century female humanist and Protestant reformer, born in Ferrara, Italy, and deceased at the young age of 29 in Heidelberg, Germany. I will explore the transformations in her life and thoughts through an analysis of her letters, which vividly capture Olympia’s voice and serve as the primary source. Her autobiographical letters are not only detailed historical documents that reconstruct her life but also provide insight into the mind of a 16th-century female reformer.

I became interested in Olympia for two main reasons. First, she embodies the convergence of humanism and the Reformation movement. By chronicling Olympia’s life, I aim to illustrate how a humanist can evolve into a religious reformer dedicated to the Bible. In Olympia, a “biblical humanist,” the relationship between humanism and the Reformation is evident. Second, my interest lies in female reformers. Studying female reformers adds diversity to the historical study of the Reformation and balances perspectives by highlighting the roles and contributions of women often overlooked in Reformation history. Additionally, since Olympia Fulvia Morata, an Italian woman, is seldom introduced in Korea, this study holds particular significance.
