본 연구는 중등학교 교과 외 활동에서 음악을 활용한 연구를 조사하고, 이를 통해 중등교육 현장에서의 음악 활용의 방향성을 탐색하고자 하였다. 분석 기준에 따라 총 43편의 연구를 선정하여 연구 동향을 개괄적으로 파악하였고, 이 중 프로그램 효과 분석을 목적으로 한 연구 15편을 선정하여 대상자 특성 및 운영체제, 음악 활동 목표 및 방법을 분석하였다. 분석 결과 교육과정에서 교과 외 활동의 중요성이 제기됨에 따라 연구 수가 증가하고 유형이 구체적으로 명시되었으며 개발연구의 비중이 높게 나타났다. 음악 활용 분석 결과로는 중학생을 대상으로 한 연구 비중이 높았으며 희망 학생을 대상으로 그룹을 형성하여 활동하는 경우가 많았다. 활동 목표로는 정서 영역 중 자기 관련 심리와 사회 영역 중 관계를 목표로 한 활동 비중이 높았으며, 활동 유형은 합주 활동의 비중이 높았고 정서 영역에서는 연주 및 감상을 중심으로 다양한 활동이 이루어졌다. 이는 중등학교 교과 외 활동에서의 음악 활용이 정서를 조절하고 타인과의 협력을 경험하며 정서 및 사회적으로 성장하기 위해 활용되고 있어 치료 접근으로서의 다양한 음악 활용이 필요한 상황이라는 것을 보여준다. 결론적으로 중등교육 내 음악활용에 대한 연구관심의 필요와 중등교육 현장에서 음악의 치료교육적 활용범위에 대한 연구 필요성을 제기하고 향후 연구발전과 지속적인 후속연구의 필요성에 대해 제언하고자 한다.
