본 연구는 20-30대인 북한이탈주민 청년을 대상으로 경제적 적응 과정을 탐색하는 것이다. 연구목적 달성을 위해 “북한이탈주민 청년들의 경제적 적응 과정과 이 과정에서 어떤 요인들이 경제적 적응에 영향을 주는가?” 라는 문제를 제시했다. 연구대상자는 자신의 경험을 잘 표현할 수 있는 북한이탈주민 청년 14명이었고, 이들과 심층면담을 진행하였다. 자료는 근거이론 방법을 활용하여 분석하였다 분석결과, ‘북한이탈주민 청년들의 경제적 적응에 대한 한계’라는 중심현상으로부터 패러다임 모형이 도출되었다. 핵심범주는 ‘북한이탈주민 청년들이 가지고 있는 경제적 적응의 한계를 극복함’이었다. 경제적 적응 과정은 ‘개인 선택 단계’, ‘개인 및 사회적 자원 활용 단계’, ‘개인 및 사회적 가치의 통합 단계’로 시간의 흐름과 상호작용에 따른 3단계가 도출되었다. 이를 통해 북한이탈주민 청년들이 ‘장마당 세대’로서 가지고 있는 기존 북한이탈주민과의 차이를 밝히고, 이들의 경제 적응을 수월하게 할 수 있는 요소를 발견할 수 있었다. 이에 이들은 자신의 내적 역량을 잘 강화시키고, 그것을 사회 공헌적 가치로 발현시킨다는 사실을 발견했다는 측면에서 본 연구의 의의가 있다. 또한 본 연구 결과는 북한이탈주민 청년들의 경제적 적응을 도울 수 있는 기초자료로 활용될 수 있을 것이다.
