이 연구는 조직 내 인하우스 PR종사자들의 직업 특성과 전문성 등을 밝혀내어 PR종사자의 직무특성을 파악하는 것을 목표로 하였다. 연구자는 PR직무의 위상이 높아졌다는 기존 연구 결과와 달리 종사자들이 자신의 업무에 대해 냉소적인 반응을 보이는 점에 착안하여 스스로 해석하는 직무 정체성을 탐색하기 위해 연구를 시작하였다. 현장의 생생한 해석을 위해 심층인터뷰를 통해 귀납적으로 도출해 내는 질적 연구방법론을 사용하였다. 인터뷰를 통해 PR실무자가 해석하는 직무 특성을 개념화하여 기존의 PR전문성과 직무 특성을 새롭게 정의하였다. 연구 결과에 따르면 직업 정체성에서 전문성의 가장 중요한 요소는 ‘관계 능력’이었다. 특히 본 연구는 관계능력이 PR직무의 핵심적 특징임을 밝혀 PR직무의 전문성에 대한 속성을 규명하였다. 관계 노동의 특성은 상대에 따라 달라져야 한다는 점에서 PR직무 특성의 새로운 측면을 살펴 볼 수 있었다. 본 연구는 한국의 PR환경에서 종사자들의 직무정체성을 살펴보고 향후 PR직무의 발전과 전문성 확보를 위한 방향을 제시했다는 점에서 의의가 있다.
