이 글은 청일전쟁과 러일전쟁을 거치며 일본이 대륙 침략을 위해 한반도에 철도를 구축하는 과정과 계획을 분석했다. 일본은 러시아에 대항한다는 명분으로 한반도에 철도를 부설했기에 처음부터 그 목적은 군사적 성격이 강했다. 게다가 일제는 청일전쟁과 러일전쟁을 겪으면서 철도가 없는 상태로 병참체제를 구축하는 것은 불가능하다는 것을 절감했다. 경부선과 경의선 부설뿐 아니라 러일전쟁 이후 일본육군을 중심으로 만들어진 한반도 철도망 계획은 모두 병참선 역할을 최우선으로 하고 있었다. 실제로, 1909년 일본육군 참모본부의 철도 계획은 향후 한반도에 실제로 건설된 철도망과 동일했 다. 이처럼 군사적 목적만을 최우선으로 고려한 철도망 구축은 현재 까지도 한국철도에 동서 간 연결성 부족이라는 문제를 남겼다.
