본 논문은 운영주체에 따라 공립과 사립 컬렉션/박물관/미술관으로 나뉘는 도식적 구분에서 벗어나 공유감에 초점을 맞추어 개인 컬렉션과 국가 문화유산의 관계를 설명하고자 한다. 공립 박물관이 사립박물관보다 재정, 조직, 소장품의 차원에서 우세한 위치에 있는 한국 사회에서, 사립 컬렉션 중 인지도나 사회적 평가의 측면에서 두드러지게 긍정적 조명을 받아온 간송(澗松) 컬렉션과 이건희 컬렉션을 사례로 하여 그 소장자가 개인적인 미술 애호가에서 국가유산의 수호자로 자리매김하는 과정을 분석한다. 간송 컬렉션과 이건희 컬렉션은 수집의도나 형성과정에서 첨예한 차이를 보이지만, 개인 컬렉션이 국가 문화유산화되면서 성화(聖化)된다는 점에서는 매우 흥미로운 평행성을 보인다. 이 두 사례의 비교를 통해 공적과 사적이라는 위상과 평가가 단순히 운영과 조직, 재정, 혹은 수집의도와 형성과정으로 결정되는 것이 아니라 국가유산의 담론 속에서 역사적 경험과 집단 정체성, 공공성의 측면에서 이루어짐을 설명한다.
