이 글은 『최인훈의 아시아』를 ‘연결과 만남’이라는 관점에서 최인훈을 읽어낸 책으로 이해하고, 그 핵심 내용을 정리하면서 몇 가지 논쟁점을 제시하였다. 『최인훈의 아시아』는 아시아의 공간, 아시아의 시간, 아시아의 원리라는 세 겹으로 구성된 최인훈의 지적 여정에 대한 문화론적 탐사다. 이 세 가지 층위에서 최인훈은 냉전 질서의 폭력에 맞선 현실 정치의 대안을, 전통의 부재와 후기식민지라는 뒤늦음에 맞서 전통의 창조적인 발견을, 기존의 세계사 인식과 주체 구성의 원리를 넘어선 대안적 원리의 모색을 향해 나아간다.

󰡔『최인훈의 아시아』는 두 가지 면에서 연결과 만남을 주제로 한다. 첫째는 최인훈을 동시대적인 혹은 이질적인 여러 목소리와 다채롭게 겹쳐 읽어 연결하고, 최인훈 안에 있는 한국 근대문학사의 전통을 가시화한다는 점에서다. 둘째는 최인훈이 민중과 만나, 아시아라는 대안적 사유까지 나아가는 과정을 밀도 있게 재구성한다는 점에서다. 저자의 관심은 논쟁과 대립이 아니라 서로의 생각을 연결하고 지식의 공유지를 만드는 데 있다. 그런 점에서 이 책은 평화와 연대, 타인에 대한 존중을 주장할 뿐 아니라 자신의 방법적 원리로 삼는다.

󰡔『최인훈의 아시아』는 최인훈이 1960년대 내내 끌어안고 있던 고민에 대한 답을 ‘아시아’로부터 발견해 가는 과정에 초점을 두기에, 그가 1970년대적인 맥락에 접속하기까지의 과정을 일종의 발전 서사로서 구성한다. 이 글은 이 발전의 내러티브 속에서 가시화되기 어려웠던 최인훈의 면모를 다시 살펴보기를 제안하였다. 그것은 최인훈에게서 ‘개인’, ‘과학과 인식론의 도입’, 그리고 ‘절필’이다. 이 글은 이러한 제안을 통하여 작가론의 방법에 대해 새롭게 고민해 볼 것을 요청하였다.

This paper analyzes Choi In-hoon’s Asia as a book that understands Choi In-hoon from the perspective of ‘connection and encounter,’ and presents several points of contention. Choi In-hoon’s Asia is a cultural exploration of Choi In-hoon’s intellectual journey, composed of three layers: the space of Asia, the time of Asia, and the principle of Asia. Within these three layers, Choi In-hoon advances toward alternatives: an alternative to the violence of the Cold War order in real politics; a creative rediscovery of tradition in the face of its absence and ‘backwardness’; and the search for alternative principles beyond existing world-historical perceptions and the principles of subject formation.

Choi In-hoon’s Asia takes connection and encounter as its theme in two respects. First, this book connects Choi In-hoon by overlaying him with diverse, heterogeneous voices, thereby visualizing the tradition of modern Korean literary history within Choi In-hoon. Second, it meticulously reconstructs Choi In-hoon’s journey of encountering the people[민중] and advancing toward an alternative vision of Asia. The author’s focus lies not in debate or confrontation, but in connecting perspectives and creating a commons of knowledge. In this sense, the book adopts peace, solidarity, and respect for others as its methodological principles.

Choi In-hoon’s Asia focuses on the process through which Choi In-hoon discovered answers to the concerns he grappled with throughout the 1960s by turning to ‘Asia’. It thus constructs the journey leading up to his engagement with the 1970s context as a kind of developmental narrative. This essay proposed revisiting aspects of Choi In-hoon that were difficult to visualize within this developmental narrative. These are the ‘individual,’ the ‘introduction of science and epistemology,’ and his ‘cessation of writing.’ Through this proposal, the essay called for a renewed consideration of the methodology of author studies.
