PURPOSE: This study examined the muscle activities of the wrist and shoulder muscles according to the forearm supporting positions during typing using surface electromyography (EMG).
METHODS: Twenty-eight participants, including 14 females and 14 males in their twenties, were recruited. The study was conducted under three different conditions: 1) wrist support, 2) half forearm support, and 3) full forearm support. Each participant was asked to type under three different supporting conditions. Before starting the first condition, the reference voluntary contractions of the upper trapezius, anterior, posterior, and middle deltoids, and wrist extensor muscles were measured using surface EMG. The muscle activity was measured for three minutes in three sets for each condition, using surface EMG.
RESULTS: Regarding the upper trapezius, the muscle activity of full forearm support was significantly lower than that of wrist or half forearm support (p < .05). The muscle activity of the middle deltoid was significantly lower with full forearm support than that of wrist support (p < .05). For the posterior deltoid, the muscle activity of half forearm support was significantly lower than that of full forearm support (p < .05). The muscle activity of the extensor carpi radialis was significantly lower with half forearm support than with wrist or full forearm support (p < .05).
CONCLUSION: The forearm supporting conditions resulted in lower muscle activity with wrist support. Therefore, forearm support can reduce muscle fatigue.*표시는 필수 입력사항입니다.
