This paper investigates the distinctive Russian cultural identity expressed in the music of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, a prominent composers of the 19th century. Situated in a period of social, and cultural transformation, Tchaikovsky synthesized Western compositional techniques with uniquely Russian elements, including folk melodies, Orthodox liturgical influences, and Slavic emotional expression.

The study is exploring the interplay between Tchaikovsky’s music and Russian culture. Also contextualizes his work within the historical and social milieu of 19th-century Russia, emphasizing the impact of aristocratic patronage, nationalism, and folk traditions. We analyzes the musical characteristics that embody Russian identity, focusing on melody, harmony, rhythm, and structural integration of folk elements. As well as examines the cultural and psychological symbolism in his compositions, illustrating how Tchaikovsky’s music reflects the Russian spirit, emotional depth, and worldview. Finally, the paper concludes by evaluating Tchaikovsky’s contribution to Russian music and culture, considering the implications.

This study combines musicological analysis with cultural-historical perspectives, offering a comprehensive understanding of how Tchaikovsky’s compositions serve as a medium for Russian cultural expression. By bridging musical form and cultural meaning, it provides insights into the enduring legacy of Russian nationalism in art music and its reception worldwide.

본 논문은 19세기 작곡가 중 표트르 일리치 차이코프스키(Пётр Ильи́ч Чайко́вский)의 음악에서 표현된 독특한 러시아 문화 정체성을 연구하였다. 사회적·정치적·문화적 변혁의 시기에 활동한 차이코프스키는 유럽의 작곡 기법과 러시아 특유의 요소인 민속 선율, 정교회 전례 음악 영향, 슬라브적 정서 표현를 종합하여 독창적인 음악 세계를 구축하였다.

차이코프스키의 음악과 러시아 문화 간 상호작용의 중요성을 강조한다. 특히, 19세기 러시아의 역사적·사회적 환경 속에서 그의 작품을 맥락화하여 민족주의, 민속 전통의 영향을 분석하는 한편, 러시아적 정체성을 구현한 음악적 특징—선율, 화성, 리듬, 민속 요소의 구조적 통합—을 분석하였다. 이를 통하여 문화적·심리적 상징성을 살펴, 차이코프스키 음악이 러시아 정신, 감정적 깊이, 세계관을 어떻게 반영하는지를 조명하는 한편, 러시아 음악과 문화에 대한 차이코프스키의 기여를 평가하고, 국가적·세계적 음악학 연구에 미치는 함의를 논의하였다.

본 연구는 음악학적 분석과 문화·역사적 관점을 결합하여, 차이코프스키의 작품이 러시아 문화 표현의 매개체로서 기능하는 방식을 채택하여 종합적 이해를 유도하였으며, 음악적 형식과 문화적 의미를 연결함으로써, 예술 음악 속 러시아 민족주의의 지속적 유산과 세계적 수용에 대한 통찰을 제공하였다.
