Chungcheongbuk-do shows relatively high ambient concentrations of PM2.5 compared to its local emissions.

However, studies identifying the causes of this phenomenon remain insufficient. EPA-PMF model was applied in this study to analyze PM2.5 sources in the Osong area of Cheongju. PM2.5 concentrations and their major chemical components were analyzed using samples collected from the Urban Air Monitoring Network in Osong between January 2021 and December 2022. PMF was applied to estimate source contributions, supported by the U.S. EPA SPECIATE 5.3 database. The seasonal average PM2.5 concentrations followed the order: winter (37.8 μg/m3)>spring (24.2 μg/m3)>autumn (17.4 μg/m3) > summer (15.1 μg/m3). On an annual basis, the chemical composition of PM2.5 was dominated by ions (52.3%), followed by unidentified components (25.2%), carbonaceous species (21.6%), and metals (0.9%). Among the ionic species, NO3 - (44.1%), SO4 2- (26.3%), and NH4 + (24.2%) were the most prevalent. According to the PMF results, the major sources of PM2.5 were identified as Secondary Nitrate (32.8%), Secondary Sulfate (21.3%), Biomass Burning (14.9%), Mobile sources (traffic-related, 14.0%), Soil dust (10.9%), and Industrial emissions (6.2%). In cross-site comparisons, Osong’s air quality showed the highest similarity with Cheonan, while its similarity with Daejeon was relatively low. For effective PM2.5 management, priority should be given to controlling secondary aerosols, which account for more than 50% of PM2.5, and to reducing their precursors (NO3 -, SO4 2-, and NH4 +). To better identify long-range transported sources affecting the Chungbuk region, it is recommended to integrate local emissions inventories with comparative analyses of other regions that exhibit similar source profiles.
