본 연구는 2024년작 태국 영화 <할머니가 죽기 전 백만장자가 되는 법(How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies)>을 연구 대상으로 설정하여 글로벌화의 배경에 따른 아시아가족 영화가 초점화 전략을 활용해 세대 관계 회복과 문화적 정체성을 재구성한 방법에 대해 탐구하였다. 연구 방법으로는 제라르 주네트의 초점화 이론을 활용하여 텍스트 분석을 진행해 영화에 나타난 내적 초점화, 외적 초점화, 제로 초점화 등 세 가지 전략의 단계적 변화와 그 서사적 기능에 대해 체계적으로 분석했다. 연구 결과에 따르면, 영화는 초점화 전략을 통해 주인공의 인지 성장 과정을 담아내며 완전한 세대 기억의 계승 체계를 구축했으며, 동시에 관객들이 개인부터 가족의 변화를 이해하는 데까지, 그리고 스토리를 관람하는 것에서 기억을 공유하는 것에 이르기까지 이끌어준다. 본 연구는 영화 분석 차원에서 제라르 주네트 이론의 유효성을 검증했으며, 아시아가족 영화에서 초점화가 기술적 수단일 뿐만 아니라 기억 윤리를 이끄는 도구이자, 문화의 가치를 전달하는 핵심 메커니즘이라는 점을 제시했다. 본 연구의 결과는 향후 현대 아시아 가족 영화의 문화적 기능을 이해하는 데 새로운 이론적 관점을 제공했다.

This study examines the 2024 Thai film How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies as its primary subject, exploring how East Asian family films, within the context of globalization, utilize focalization strategies to reconstruct generational relationships and cultural identity. Employing Gérard Genette’s theory of narrative focalization, the research conducts a textual analysis focusing on the progressive shifts among internal, external, and zero focalization and their narrative functions. The findings reveal that the film uses these focalization strategies to portray the protagonist’s cognitive development and to build a complete system of intergenerational memory transmission. Simultaneously, the film guides audiences from understanding individual and familial change to sharing memories rather than merely consuming a story. This study validates the applicability of Genette’s theory in film analysis and argues that focalization in East Asian family cinema functions not only as a technical device but also as an ethical tool for memory and a core mechanism for conveying cultural values. These results offer a new theoretical perspective for understanding the cultural role of contemporary Asian family films.
