이 글은 천문학 교과서 『텬문략ᄒᆡ』(1908)의 용어집을 분석함으로써 개화기 번역장 내 언어와 지식의 교차 현상을 이해하고자 한다. 이 책은 숭실학당 설립자 윌리엄 베어드가 영어 원서 Popular Astronomy와중문역본 󰡔天文略解󰡕를 참고해 순한글로 번역했다. 특히 부록으로 추가된 용어집은 국역본에만 존재하는데, 숭실대 학생 김인식의 보조로 작성되었다. 이 용어집은 순우리말 고유어와 한자어, 영어 음차 외래어 사이에서 협상해야 했던 당시 번역가들의 고민을 입증한다. 당시 과학용어의 번역과 명명 과정을 이해하기 위해 리디아 리우(Lydia Liu)의 ‘언어횡단적 실천(translingual practice)’ 이론을 적용해본다. 원천어-기점어의 단순도식 대신 주인언어(한문, 한국어)와 손님언어(영어, 일본어)의 교섭이라는 새로운 관점으로 개화기 번역장을 분석할 수 있기 때문이다. 또한 그 언어·문화적 협상의 구체적 사례로 “Solar system”의 번역어가 중문역본과 국문역본에서 달라졌음을 제시한다. 이를 통해 베어드와 김인식의 협상 불발 가능성, 이들의 번역 경로(영-중-한)가 동시대 한국 지식인의 경로(영-일-한)와 달랐던 점, 결국 국내 학계에서는 후자의 경로로 명명된 용어가 보편 수용되었음을 논한다. 결론적으로, 『텬문략ᄒᆡ』 용어집은 개화기 번역장 내 여러 주체들의 언어횡단적 실천을 실증하는 자료로서 가치가 크다.

This article explores the intersection of language and knowledge in Korea’s translation field during the enlightenment-era by analyzing the glossary appended to the astronomy textbook, Tyeonmun ryakhae(1908). Translated into vernacular Korean by William Baird, founder of Soongsil Academy, the textbook draws on both the English original Popular Astronomy and its Chinese translation Tianwen lüejie (天文略解). The glossary, which appears only in the Korean edition, was compiled with the assistance of Kim In-sik, a Soongsil student, and reveals the translators’ negotiations between native Korean vocabulary, Sino-Korean terms, and phonetically transcribed English loanwords. To understand how scientific terms were translated and coined during this period, the study applies Lydia Liu’s theory of translingual practice, which moves beyond a linear source-target model and instead emphasizes negotiations between “host” languages (Classical Chinese, Korean) and “guest” languages (English, Japanese). As a concrete example of such negotiation, the paper examines how the term “solar system” was translated differently in the Chinese and Korean versions. This divergence reveals the possibility of unresolved decisions between Baird and Kim, the distinct translation routes they followed (English–Chinese–Korean) as compared to those of contemporary Korean intellectuals (English Japanese–Korean), and the eventual dominance of the latter route in the naming conventions adopted by the Korean academic community. Ultimately, the glossary of Tyeonmun ryakhae serves as a valuable source for tracing the translingual practices of multiple translation agents in Korea’s transitional era.
