한국 사회에서 지난 제20대 대선 과정과 12.3 내란 이후 가짜뉴스는 사회적 이슈였다. 가짜뉴스는 의도적으로 조작되고 확대되어 사회 전체에 나쁜 영향을 준다. 최근 가짜뉴스가 증가하는 이유로는 현대 미디어 환경의 변화라고 볼 수 있다. 이런 미디어 환경에서 누구나 가짜뉴스의 생산자가 될 수 있다. 가짜뉴스를 소비하는 사람들은 이를 미디어를 통해서 다시금 확산시켜 재생산하고 유통하는 주체가 될 수 있다.

움베르토 에코(Umberto Eco)의 소설 『프라하의 묘지』는 가짜뉴스가 작동하는 방식과 그 문제점을 이해하는 데 중요한 통찰을 제공한다고 본다. 이 소설은 19세기의 실제 사건들과 실존 인물들을 등장시키고, 19세기에 널리 유포된 문서들을 다시 사용하여 독자들에게 진실과 거짓을 구분하기 어려운 혼란스러운 경험을 준다. 이 소설에서 가짜뉴스의 작동 구조는 다음과 같다. 파편적인 정보와 팩트의 왜곡및 재구성, 공모론적 사고의 투영, 문서 위조와 조작, 반복과 확산, 익명성과 책임 회피, 그리고 감정적 호소와 편견 이용이다.

한국에서 가짜뉴스는 보수 개신교와 밀접한 연관성을 가지고 있어 가짜뉴스의 최소화를 위해서 기독교윤리적 성찰이 필요하다고 본다.

이 글은 가짜뉴스의 생성, 유통, 그리고 소비구조 속에서 에코의 소설 『프라하의 묘지』에서 작동된 가짜뉴스의 메커니즘을 기술하고 나가는 말에서 가짜뉴스의 최소화를 위한 제언을 짧게 모색해 보고자 한다.

The issue of fake news has been a significant social concern in South Korean society, particularly in the wake of the 20th presidential election and the events surrounding the 12.3 Insurrection. Fake news is deliberately manipulated and amplified, leading to detrimental effects on the entire society.

The recent proliferation of fake news can be attributed to the evolution of the modern media environment, where anyone can potentially become a producer of misinformation. Consumers of fake news, in turn, become agents of its reproduction and distribution by further disseminating it through media channels.

Umberto Eco's novel The Prague Cemetery (Il cimitero di Praga) is believed to offer crucial insights into understanding the mechanisms and problematic nature of fake news. The novel features real 19th-century events and historical figures, and re-uses widely circulated documents from that era, creating a confusing experience for the reader who must discern between truth and falsehood. The structure of fake news as demonstrated in this novel includes the following elements: fragmentation and distortion of facts and information, projection of a conspiratorial mindset, document forgery and manipulation, repetition and dissemination, anonymity and avoidance of responsibility, and the exploitation of emotional appeals and prejudices.

Given the close association between fake news and conservative Protestantism in the Korean context, ethical reflection from a Christian ethics perspective is deemed necessary for minimizing its spread. This paper aims to detail the mechanism of fake news as operated in Eco's The Prague Cemetery within the framework of the generation, distribution, and consumption structure of fake news, and will conclude with a brief suggestion for minimizing its influence.
