21세기 들어 고전적 자료를 디지털로 변환해 연구자 및 일반 대중에게 제공하는 디지털 아카이브 작업이 활발히 수행되었다. 이는 2000년대까지만 하더라도 중앙 중심의 자료 집적이 주를 이루었으나, 2010년대 이후에는 지역 문화 진흥에 대한 시대적 요구에 따라 지역 주도의 아카이브 구축 작업 또한 적극적으로 이루어졌다.

강원 역시 이와 같은 경향에 발맞추어 지역의 고전적(古典籍) 자료를 광범위하게 수집해 제공하고자 노력하였다. 강원대학교 국학연구소가 주축이 되어 수행한 <한국학자료센터: 강원권역센터> 구축 사업, 율곡국학진흥원에서 마련해 운영하고 있는 <강원한국학아카이브>가 대표적이다. 이들은 이전까지 ‘강원’이라는 이름 하에 발굴·정리되지 못하였던 자료들을 한데 모아 제공한다는 점에서 무엇보다도 큰 의의를 지닌다.

다만 시간, 재원, 인력 부족 등의 이유로 해당 자료에 대한 고도의 가공 단계까지는 아직 나아가지 못한 상황이다. 향후 ‘자료 구축의 내실화’, ‘체계성’, ‘확장성’의 측면에서 보완이 이루어진다면 보다 완성도 높은 아카이브 구축이 가능할 것이라 본다. 아울러, 그러한 연구 환경을 안정적으로 조성하기 위해 강원 지역 내 자체적인 고전 인력 양성 기관·프로그램을 마련하는 일도 시급하다.
