본고는 현철의『하믈레트』번역에서 ｢King｣과 ｢Queen｣의 호칭 번역을 중심으로, 일본어 완역본 3종과 비교하여 그 특성과 차별성을 고찰하였다. 작품 내에서 국왕･왕비가 스스로를 지칭하는 경우는 드물고, 대부분 주변 인물의 호칭을 통해 드러난다. ｢King｣의 경우 일본어 역본과 현철 모두 ｢王, 国王, 陛下｣를 주로 사용하였으며, 선왕은 ｢先王, 父王｣으로 구분되었다. 현철의 독자성은 현 국왕을 부정적으로 묘사할 때 ｢人君, 인군, 임군｣을 쓰거나 신하가 ｢聖上陛下｣라는 극존칭을 사용하는 점에서 나타난다. 또한 햄릿 부왕에 대해서는 ｢父皇陛下, 先父皇陛下｣등 일본어 번역에는 없는 표현을 활용하였다.

｢Queen｣의 경우, 久米･坪内역은 ｢妃｣를, 현철･戸沢역은 ｢皇后｣계열을 주로 사용하였다. 햄릿의 어머니 지칭 시에는 대부분 ｢母｣의 의미를 반영하였으며, 현철 역시 이를 따랐다. 그러나 현철은 ｢王后, 后妃, 内殿, 内殿陛下, 国母陛下, 后陛下｣ 등 다양한 궁중 호칭을 도입하여 표현의 폭을 넓혔다. 이는 일본어 번역의 단순 모방을 넘어선 의역으로 평가되나, 일부 호칭은 한국 전통에서 자유롭게 쓰이지 않은 점은 한계라 할 수 있다. 종합하면, 현철은 일본어 역본을 참고하면서도 맥락에 따른 다양한 어휘 선택과 독창적 호칭을 통해 자신만의 번역 원칙을 구현하였다.
