야마노쿠치 바쿠(山之口貘) 문학에 있어서의 ‘조선’ 연구가 최근 한국에서 시작되었다. 본고는 바쿠를 식민지와 제국의 경계선에 두고 고찰하는 연구에 대하여 의문을 가지고 그의 전체 문학 속에서 ‘조선’ 표상을 고찰하고자 하였다. 대상 작품은 시 2편, 소설 3편, 수필 1편으로 그 외 조선인이 등장하지만 민족 문제를 다룬 것으로 확정되지 않는 몇몇 소설은 참고 자료로만 삼았다.

분석 결과 바쿠는 식민지 조선인뿐 아니라 일본인도 함께 통괄하여 부조리한 현실로써 비판하여 풍자하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 오키나와 시인으로서의 정체성을 문학상으로도 실생활에서도 감추지 않고 투쟁해온 사실도 확인할 수 있었다. 선행연구에서 발생한 여타의 오해들은 전전이라는 시대적 특성과 함께 우회적이고 풍자적인 그의 글쓰기에서 기인하였음을 논했다.

바쿠의 문학적 지향성은 그 스스로 ‘자기류’로 표현해온 바 생활로써의 현실을 지양하고 고고한 정신성를 추구하고자 한 데에서 비롯된 것이며 그것은 그가 속한 ‘역정파(歴程派)’의 특성과도 일치한다고 결론지었다.
