본 연구는 16T8세기 동아시아 지터류(board-zither) 현악기의 회화 도상을 대 상으로, AI 기반 도상 분석을 활용하여 시각적 특성과 문화사적 의미를 비교 •분 석하였다. 연구의 목적은 해당 악기군이 각국의 시각문화 속에서 어떠한 미학적 질서와 상징체계를 통해 표상되었는지를 규명하는 데 있다. 세 나라의 회화 속 현 악기 도상은 단순한 악기 재현이 아니라, 음악 행위를 통해 사회적 위계 •예악 사 상•미적 감수성을 시각화한 문화적 상징체계로 기능하였다. 한국에서는 문인 풍 류와 내면 교양의 미학, 중국에서는 궁정 예악과 위계 질서의 미학, 일본에서는 여 성 예능과 도시적 감각미의 미학이 각각 두드러지게 나타난다.

방법론적으로 본 연구는 파노프스키(Panofsky)의 도상학(iconology) 이론을 토 대로, 제1단계 사전 아이콘적 기술(Pre-iconographical Description)을 정량 지표 기 반 비교 분석으로 확장하였다. 회화 속 악기의 공간적 배치, 구도, 인물-악기 관계 등 핵심 시각 요소를 데이터화하고, 그 결과를 제2 ・ 3단계(아이콘적 분석-아이코놀로 지적 해석)의 문화사적 의미망과 연계함으로써, 전통 도상학의 해석 과정을 데이터 기반 분석과 결합하여, 해석 과정의 객관성과 반복 가능성을 보완하였다.

분석 결과, 동아시아 삼국의 지터류 현악기 도상은 일정한 균형 ■안정 지향의 시각 질서가 공통적으로 관찰되었으나, 그 구현 방식은 각 사회의 구조와 미적 감 성에 따라 서로 다르게 형성되었다. 한국은 내면 수양과 풍류 미학, 중국은 예악 질 서와 정치적 위계, 일본은 감각적 세련미와 여성 교양이라는 방향으로 재맥락화되 었다.

본 연구는 전통 도상학의 정성적 해석에 AI 기반 도상 분석 (AI-based iconometric analysis)을 결합함으로써, 동아시아 지터류 현악기 도상의 형상적 •문화적 특성을 실증적으로 규명하였다. 이러한 AI 기반 도상 분석의 융합적 적용은 음악학•악기 학•시각문화연구를 아우르는 새로운 방법론을 제시하며, 디지털 인문학과 전통 음악 연구를 연계하는 학제 간 연구 기반을 마련하였다.

This study investigates the painted iconography of zither-type string instruments in East Asia (16th-18th centuries) and employs AI-based iconographic analysis to compare their visual characteristics and cultural-historical meanings.

Methodologically, the research is grounded in Panofsky’s iconological framework. The first stage of pre-iconographical description is extended through AI-driven quantitative analysis, which translates spatial placement, performance posture, compositional structure, and performer-instrument relations into structured visual metrics. These metrics are subsequently integrated into the iconographic and iconological stages to contextualize their cultural significance.

The comparative findings show that, although the three cultures shared a common aesthetic ideal of harmony (和), their zither iconographies produced distinct visual orders aligned with each society’s structural and aesthetic orientations－Korea with moral cultivation and literati refinement, China with ritual order and political hierarchy, and Japan with sensory aesthetics and feminine cultural practice.

By combining AI-based quantitative analysis with iconological interpretation, this study presents an exploratory framework for identifying morphological and cultural patterns in East Asian zither iconography, offering an interdisciplinary methodological foundation that connects musicology, organology, visual culture studies, and digital humanities.
