본 고는 로메오 카스텔루치(Romeo Castellucci)의 공연 <지옥>(Inferno, 2008)을 중심으로, 실재계의 드러남이 어떻게 정치성을 띨 수 있는지 탐구한다. 카스텔루치는 단테(Dante Alighieri)의 『신곡, La Divina Commedia』을 무대화하면서, 지옥을 사후의 형벌로 재현하지 않고 ‘지금-여기’ 현실 속에서 드러나는 지옥의 상을 체감하도록 이끈다. 고통과 절규, 폭발과 침묵, 이름 없는 존재와 파편화된 이미지들의 병렬은 해석의 가능성을 제시하지 않으며, 오히려 드러남 자체를 사건으로 삼아 관객을 실재와 마주하게 한다.
본 논문은 실재의 드러남을 분석하기 위해 라캉의 실재계 개념과 아감벤의 무위 개념을 이론적 틀로 삼았다. 실재계는 언어와 상징계의 균열 속에서 불가능한 것이 반복적으로 귀환하는 자리이며, 무위는 제도와 법의 작동을 중지시킴으로써 새로운 공동체의 가능성을 열어놓는 상태이다. 두 개념은 카스텔루치의 무대에서 연쇄적으로 맞물리며, 재현의 파괴가 정치 없는 정치극의 가능성으로 이어지는 과정을 설명한다.
이러한 이론적 틀 위에서, 본 논문은 <지옥>의 주요 장면 - 이름과 호명, 군중과 순환하는 농구공, 불타는 피아노, 어린이와 워홀, 베일과 Etoiles(별) - 을 분석함으로써, 실재의 돌출이 기존의 정치적 합의와 재현을 무력화하며 정치 없는 정치극의 가능성을 열어 보임을 논증한다. 통상적으로 카스텔루치의 연극은 이미지성에 주목하여 분석되어 왔으나, 본 연구는 그 이미지들이 단순한 미학적 충격이나 아이코노클라즘(iconoclasm)으로 환원되지 않음을 강조한다. 카스텔루치가 말이 아닌 이미지를 선택한 이유는, 그것이 단순한 미학적 효과가 아니라 실재의 돌출과 무위의 작동을 매개하며 정치 없는 정치극으로 직행하기 때문이다. 따라서 본 논문은 카스텔루치 연구의 기존 이미지 중심 해석을 넘어, 동시대 연극의 정치성을 사유하는 새로운 틀을 제시한다.
This article examines Romeo Castellucci’s performance Inferno (2008), addressing the question of how the eruption of the Real can acquire a political dimension. In staging Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy, Castellucci does not represent hell as a scene of posthumous punishment; instead, he leads the audience to experience the presence of hell in the here and now. Cries of suffering, explosions and silences, nameless beings, and a montage of fragmented images do not offer allegorical meanings or assertive statements; rather, they transform appearance itself into an event that confronts the audience with the Real.
To analyze this, the study adopts Jacques Lacan’s concept of the Real and Giorgio Agamben’s notion of inoperosità as its theoretical framework. The Real is the site where the impossible returns through the fissures of language and the symbolic order, while inoperosità suspends the operation of law and institutions, thereby opening the potential for a new form of community. These two concepts converge in Castellucci’s theatre, where the destruction of representation is transfigured into the possibility of a ‘politics without politics’.
Building on this theoretical framework, this article analyzes the key scenes of Inferno (2008) — self-naming, the crowd and the circulating basketball, the burning piano, the juxtaposition of children with Warhol, and the veil with Étoiles — to demonstrate how the irruption of the Real dismantles established political consensus and representation, thereby opening the possibility of a politics without politics. While Castellucci’s theatre has conventionally been analyzed with an emphasis on its imagery, this study argues that such images cannot be reduced to mere aesthetic shock or iconoclasm. Castellucci’s choice of images over words is not a matter of visual effect alone, but rather a medium through which the irruption of the Real and the operation of inoperosità are mediated, leading toward a politics without politics. Ultimately, the destination is the sensorial manifestation of the coming community. Accordingly, this article proposes a new framework for thinking about the political dimension of contemporary theatre, moving beyond image-centered interpretations of Castellucci’s work.권호기사
