이 논문은 십이단(주요 기도)의 기원과 편찬, 간행 연혁, 판형·제본의 분류와 특성에대해 정리했다. 십이단의 기원과 최초 편찬자는 명확히 알 수 없지만, 기존의 통설과 달리 1830년대 이전부터 천주교 신자들이 필수적으로 배워야 하는 기도문이었고, 1860년대교회서적의 정본이 간행되는 시점에서 십이단의 체제가 완성되었을 것으로 추정된다. 중국 천주교회에서 사용되던 주요 기도문 모음인 ‘성교요경’이 십이단의 원형일 가능성이높다. 조선 천주교회에서는 요경을 편집하여 독자적인 십이단을 만들었고, 중국의 경우와달리 교리문답서[성교요리문답]가 아니라 기도서[천주성교공과]에 수록된 기도문에 †표시를 하는 방식으로 십이단을 제시했다. 초간 연도는 모르지만 십이단 단행본도 간행하여『천주성교공과』와 함께 배포하였다. 현존하는 가장 오래된 판본은 1886년 서울에서 간행된『텬쥬셩교십이단』이다. 이후 대내외적 시대 변화와 맞물려 교회서적 체제가 개편되면서 십이단도 판형·제본과 기도문의 편제(수록과 순서) 방식이 바뀌어 나갔다. 단행본 외에 다른 책과 합본한 책자로 간행되기도 하고, 다른 책의 앞부분이나 뒷 부분[부록]에 포함되는 형태로 간행되기도 했다. 1930년대 이후 단행본의 제목은『천주교십이단』으로 바뀌었다. 제2차 바티칸 공의회 이후에는 ‘주요 기도’로 명칭이 바뀌었고,『가톨릭 기도서』와 예비 신자 교리서에 수록되어 있다.

This paper summarizes the origin, compilation, publication history, and classification and characteristics of the editions and manuscripts of the Twelve Prayers (Main Prayers). The origin and first compiler of the Twelve Prayers are not clearly known, but contrary to the existing general theory, it was a prayer that Catholics had to learn even before the 1830s, and it is presumed that the system of the Twelve Prayers was completed when the standard version of church books was published in the 1860s. It is highly likely that the ‘Sheng Jiao Yo Jing’, a collection of main prayers used in the Chinese Catholic Church, is the original form of the Twelve Prayers. The Joseon Catholic Church edited the Yo Jing to create its own Twelve Prayers, and unlike in China, it presented the Twelve Prayers by marking the prayers in the prayer book [HTYEN TJYOU SYENG KYO GONG GOA] with a † instead of the catechism [SYENG KYO YO RI MOON TAP]. The year of first publication is unknown, but a volume version of Twelve Prayers was also published and distributed together with HTYEN TJYOU SYENG KYO GONG GOA. The oldest extant edition is HTYEN TJYOU SYENG KYO SIP I TAN published in Seoul in 1886. As the system of church books was reorganized in line with domestic and international changes, the format, binding, and organization(contents and order) of the Twelve Prayers also changed. In addition to the single volume, it was also published as a combined book with other books, and was sometimes published as an appendix to the front or back of other books. After the 1930s, the title of the single volume was changed to CHEON JOU KYO SIP I TAN. After the Second Vatican Council, the name was changed to ‘Main Prayers’ and it is included in CATHOLIC PRAYER BOOK and the Catechism for Catechumens.
