본 연구는 대한제국기에 편찬된 중학교용 역사교과서 ｢대한역대사략｣ 卷7-8을 단순히 ｢동국역대사략｣ 卷1-6의 후속편으로 간주해 온 기존 연구에 대해 의문을 제기하며 ｢대한역대사략｣․｢동국역대사략｣의 편찬 및 간행에 관한 사실관계를 검증하고 그 역사적 의미에 대해 논하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 ｢대한역대사략｣ 卷7-8 규장각본과 ｢보통교과 동국역사｣ 卷6 국회도서관본을 핵심 자료로 활용하였다. 그 결과 당초 한 편의 통사로 기획된 ｢대한역대사략｣ 卷1-8이 집필되었으나 편찬․간행 계획 변경으로 ｢本朝紀｣를 제외한 卷1-6만이 ｢동국역대사략｣이라는 書名으로 실제 유통․배포되었음을 밝혔다. 그리고 이를 바탕으로 當代史 편찬의 필요성이 대두되면서도, 현실적으로 관철될 수 없었던 당시의 상황에 대해 논하였다.

This study raises questions about the prevailing scholarly view that the middle school history textbook Daehan Yeokdaesaryak, compiled under the Korean Empire period, can be simply regarded as a continuation of Dongguk Yeokdaesaryak. It aims to verify the factual relationship concerning the compilation and publication of Daehan Yeokdaesaryak and Dongguk Yeokdaesaryak and to discuss their historical implications. For this purpose, the copy of Daehan Yeokdaesaryak Vols. 7-8 held at Kyujanggak and the copy of Botong Gyogwa Dongguk Yeoksa Vol. 6 held at the National Assembly Library were used as the primary sources. As a result, it was found that, in the initial plan Daehan Yeokdaesaryak Vols. 1-8 were conceived and written as a single comprehensive history, changes in the compilation and publication plan led to only Vols. 1-6 ― excluding the section “Bonjo-gi” (本朝紀) ― being actually circulated and distributed under the title Dongguk Yeokdaesaryak (A Concise History of the Eastern Country’s Successive Dynasties, 東國歷代史略). Building on this finding, the study discusses how, although the need to compile a contemporary history was increasingly recognized, it could not be put into practice under the conditions of the time.
