생성형 AI를 활용한 뮤지컬 무대의상 디자인 프로세스 연구: Midjourney 기반 ‘스위니 토드’를 중심으로

연구 목적: 본 연구의 목적은 생성형 AI 도구인 Midjourney를 뮤지컬 무대의상 디자인의 초기 시각화 단계에 체계적으로 적용하고, 전문가 평가를 통해 그 효용성과 한계를 실증적으로 분석하는 것이다.

연구 방법: 이러한 연구목적 달성을 위한 연구방법은 사례 연구 기반 혼합방법론을 채택하여 「스위니 토드」(19세기)와 「그리스」(1950년대)의 주요 캐릭터 의상을 Midjourney로 디자인하고, 무대의상 및 연출 전문가 8명을 대상으로 정량적·정성적 평가를 실시하였다.

연구 내용: 주요 연구내용은 두 작품 모두 심미성과 캐릭터 표현력에서 높은 평가를 받았으나, 제작 실현 가능성은 「그리스」(4.94점)가 「스위니 토드」(4.75점)보다 유의미하게 높아(p<.01) 복잡한 역사 복식 구현의 한계를 보였다.

결론 및 제언: 연구결과 Midjourney는 초기 콘셉트 시각화에 유용하나 실제 제작을 위해서는 전문가의 경험적 판단이 필수적이다. 향후 다양한 장르로 연구를 확대하고 AI 생성 디자인의 실제 무대 적용 효과 검증이 요구된다.

A Study on Musical Costume Design Process Using Generative AI: Focusing on Midjourney Based Design for ‘Sweeney Todd’*

Abstract: This study systematically applies Midjourney, a generative AI tool, to the initial visualization stage of musical costume design and empirically analyzes its effectiveness and limitations through expert evaluation. Adopting a case study-based mixed methods approach, costume designs for main characters in Sweeney Todd (19th century) and Grease (1950s) were developed using Midjourney and evaluated by eight experts in costume design and directing through both quantitative and qualitative assessments. Both works received high evaluations in aesthetic quality and character expression with no significant differences between them. However, practical feasibility was significantly higher for Grease (4.94) than Sweeney Todd (4.75) (p<.01), revealing limitations in implementing complex historical costumes through AI. Experts identified time efficiency and visual communication clarity as advantages, while noting insufficient reflection of stage environment factors such as actor movement, lighting response, and material properties. While Midjourney is useful for initial concept visualization in early design stages, expert judgment and additional design work remain essential for actual production. This study presents empirical evidence of generative AI application in musical costume design and suggests future research should expand to diverse genres and verify AI-generated designs in actual production and stage implementation.
