이 논문은 삼척, 울진, 영해 지역의 노거수 ‘울릉도 향나무’(이른바 울향) 분포를 파악하기 위해 성황당 및 양반가 고택의 노거수 향나무에 대해 기초 조사이다.

이번 조사에서는, 시간과 자료의 제약 때문에, 울향과의 연관성을 알아낼 만한 직접적인 단서는 찾을 수는 없었다. 이 논문에서 논의한 내용을 정리하면 다음과 같다.

첫째, 노거수 향나무는 삼척, 울진 지역에서는 성황당의 신목(神木)으로, 영해 지역은 양반가 고택에 심겨져 있었다. 그 용도는 제례용이거나 지역민들의 안전을 비는 수호신 역할을 하고 있었다.

둘째, 대부분의 노거수 향나무는 군지, 읍지, 면지 등에 제대로 기록이 되어 있지 않고 있다. 따라서 추후 심층적인 보완 조사가 필요하다.

셋째, 기록이 부족하여 울향과의 관계가 모호하고, 그 상관성을 논증해내기 어렵다. 추후 자료 및 구술 조사, 나아가 유전자 조사 등을 통해 밝힐 필요가 있다.

넷째, 이번 논문에서는 제외하였지만, 울향과 관련 없이 동해안에 자생하는 지역 고유의 향나무가 ‘삼척, 울진, 영해’ 지역의 성황당 및 양반가 고택의 향나무와 어떤 관계인지도 밝혀져야 한다. 이를 통해서 울향의 분포가 명확해질 것이다.
